I'm making a site for my granddad called Barters Market.
He wants to make money off the site but his ideas are a little unrealistic.

My Idea:
Create a system called barter points.
Charge $2.50 for 5 barter points (with deals and ..% off)
1 barter point = 1 Barter listing.

His idea:
Use barter points
Charge $5.00 for 1 barter point
2 barter points = 1 barter listing (so $10 for a listing)

Which is better (pretty simple)

and would you use this site?

@fokerss it's a website where people but up things to barter

@taz 😉

Yours as people would not want to pay $5 for 1 point, 5 for $2.50 sounds about right to me.

Yes $2.50 is a great price that way you make money and you don't scare people off

I was say start off with your idea first and as things get up and moving and demand increases I'd increase the price but still not at the rate he insisted upon.

That is how I plan it start small offer deals then higher if necessary

I had to compromise on the prices now it's $1 = 1 barter point
But there will be price deals.

Breaking into that kind of market is very difficult, there are lots of classified sites out there already (I do realise that your site isn't exactly a classified site) and it is difficult to get advertisers to pay for ads before you are established. When your site is first set up it will not have much activity, so why would someone pay for a barter listing if not many people are going to see it?

Have you considered offering the first say 500 listings free of charge?

I could never get him to do 500 Free I could get away with 1-5 maybe but 500 not a chance 😛

You could always try selling the listings, then if they don't sell offer them for free until the site becomes busy.

I like Fergal's idea of offering say the first 100 free. If people see you charging and you are an empty site, they will run away faster than you know. No one wants to barter with just them selves. You have to show that it is a busy site. One great way to do that is give out some for free. It will make you more money in the long run.

Ebay is something like $0.30 a listing for the cheapest option so I can't see $10 working. Yours is closer, but you need the promotions to get it running. It's unreasonable to expect anyone to spend a cent if there's no activity, even 5 auctions won't spark interest, and 500 really wouldnt take long to go, week or so once you start?

Again 500 is fine with me I even like the idea but my granddad (since this is his site) won't allow it.
