I've been wondering this for a while. Which is better, your Alexa Rank or your PageRank?

Not going to vote yet, but:

Alexa: determined really by who has the Alexa toolbar installed, and then the amount of traffic. I could have PR8 sites and have a really bad Alexa because no one with the Alexa toolbar has actually seen the site.

PR: determined by the value of inbound links (and other stuff) with a formula. With SEO techniques etc., the more inbound links of higher quality, the higher your PR. When relating it to Alexa, you don't really need an "awesome" amount of traffic, so its hard to determine how that site ranks when compared to others.

Concluding, they really go hand-in-hand, though still not decided yet.

I think PR is slightly more important as it is more of a selling point. If you look at marketplace topics, people tend to mention the PR of the site or people ask about the PR of the site. People tend not to do that with the Alexa rank. I personally see them both equal and take both with a bit a caution.

I personally think PR is better. Alexa is nothing really, just traffic and stuff. I think my forum is like 800,000 lol

I don´t really care about both of them, but by what I´ve seen its PR that is more important.

PR. Visitors have to have the toolbar installed to matter with Alexa.

+1 to that for sure

Alexa. Pagerank doesn't really deal with how popular a site is.

Though that may be true, it only affects when the visitor has the Alexa toolbar installed. Like what Clover said, his forum is 800 000 Alexa, which isn't too good. Fergal's BAF, with considerably lower stats is in the top 40 000 or so. Its not too accurate.

Very good question and a difficult one to answer.

Alexa Rank to an extent does show much traffic your site gets and is a good selling point if you do choose to sell your site.

PageRank is good if you want to sell links/domains and if you build up a good PR, you're more likely to make money whilst running your site.

So I'm going for PageRank because it's a more effective selling point when you're running your site and not just when you sell it (if you do) which is more the case for Alexa Ranking, at least IMO.

I voted for PR. Alexa rankings can be manipulated too easily and very rarely are accurate. Quantcast is a better alternative to Alexa, in my opinion.

Better to who, exactly?

I have sites that have PR4 but get so little traffic they're pointless (I don't even know why they have such high PR for) and the alexa rank reflects that

I also have some sites that have PR1/PR2 that get 10,000+ unique visitors a day and hence a higher alexa rank.

So from a traffic/popularity perspective, Alexa is more important.

However from a SEO perspective, PR is more important.

Exactly what swg said.

I think overall, people look at the PR when they decide to sell, or make trades.

I'd have to say otherwise.

Having sold a forum myself, I got the sale mostly because of a decent Alexa rank (<1,000,000) rather than a PageRank.

Personally, I would prefer a PR 8 then a 500 000 Alexa (<1 000 000).
