My vehicle started making a whining sound about 15 minutes after starting the vehicle and driving and it does it when in drive as well as in idle. We changed the engine clean air filter today so that wasn't it. Any ideas of what it could be?

The first thing to check is your fan belt tensioner and the belt itself; after years of use, the bearing may be dry, and it may be time for replacement.🙂

I had my annual inspection in November, so they should have checked it then. But that's something I'll try to take a look at tomorrow. Thanks!

That will give no warning, and there is no way to inspect that particular part as the bearings are internal.

So today, I drove the vehicle to the grocery store which is 15 minutes away and the noise didn't happen. It's also 5 degrees cooler than it was when we drove it yesterday. Still the same thing with the bearings, you think?

Here's my update...today I drove it a couple times and there was no noise. When I got home after driving it for over 40 minutes, I remembered that yesterday I had the defroster on and that uses the AC. So that narrows things down a bit more. Tomorrow I'll go out again and try it with the defroster on again...or maybe the AC since it could be warm in the afternoon.
