I was just reading the prison for kids topic, and it got me thinking, should we be putting non violent offenders in prison, a place where they probably come out going from non violent to violent? I honestly don't know enough at this point and am wondering if anyone has any ideas on this. I mean if you think further what about drug dealers and drug lords, pimps, etc.

Drug dealers: Most are harmless, the douche bags that sell grit weed or carry around weapons deserve to be in prison though.

Pimps: Eh, as long as they aren't part of the sex slave industry then I don't feel they should be in prison.

Imagine how much money the state and federal governments would save if that were the case?

Private prisons are a big business though so it would never happen.

Uhh... Just let one of the movie killers kill them. Let Pennywise allow them to float. :3

I seriously think that sometimes the Judge's decisions are stupid. =/ But drug dealers can't even hit a fly. 😛 The University students doing all the damage in England should be in Jail though. After smashing the car Charles and Camilla were in.

I think that, when dealing with the justice system, three things need to be taken into account: public safety, rehabilitation and justice. By putting someone in prison, we do improve public safety, as they cannot commit an offence while inside. However, it could be argued that, if they turn from non-violence to violence, it could damage public safety. Putting people in prison is likely to be a less effective method of rehabilitation; reintegrating them with the community and getting them to pay back the damage will help in getting offenders to recognise what's gone wrong. Finally, justice is served by putting people in prison but, for non-violent crimes, I would argue that community service sentences, which directly pay back damage caused is more effective in doing justice. Therefore, I'd say that non-violent criminals may be better off doing something like community services, provided security can be accounted for.

Yeah and they're pretty happy now that their leader is our president
You know, I view Obama as a pretty well-rounded guy. I don't know anybody else who could balance being a Marxist, Muslim, AND Kenyan citizen at the same time.

I'm not quite sure what people don't like about Obama... He's significantly better than Bush, he's won a Nobel Peace Prize, he's helping the country out of recession and he's introduced universal health care - I'd say that's pretty impressive.

People who are conservatives hate Obama because he's a "Kenyan-born communist, socialist, Muslim, Marxist Nazi." People who are liberals (TRUE liberals), as I am, prayed that Obama would win the 2008 election, but we also recognize that he still doesn't represent our ideals in any way, shape, or form. Obama also has not introduced universal health care; he's introduced what barely qualifies as "near-universal" health care that still leaves corporations in control of our health care system. What he introduced doesn't even come remotely close to what you have in the UK.

I think splitting the murder/drug/assault and the other offenders would be a great idea, as life can be tough in jail and I'm sure the government dont want the murderers rubbing off on the other prisoners

I know - what he introduced was limited. However, in such a right-wing country, even that was a big step in the right direction.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. I guess the solution for Americans who aren't radical right-wingers is simply to move to a more centrist country. I don't think there is a libertarian leftist country in existence. Norway and Sweden are pretty close, though.

Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a tooth that what I say... If someone steals, they should be able to goto jail but if someone murders... say good bye to them. It was there choice to do it. screw them.

Well, drug dealers, pimps, gang-bangers and everyone else. If you're just a simple person that gets in trouble for misdemeanors, then you shouldn't go to prison - only the county.

But, those that have felonies - especially that keep getting in trouble and not learning, belong in prison.

Thank god you don't decide our laws then.
What do you about the countless people who'd be wrongly accused that you slaughtered? Things aren't always black and white. Killing a murderer is the same as being the murderer IMO.

What would you do if you are put up at gun point to kill someone else? You do have a choice of not killing or killing. So either way, you would die by your simple logic (ie. if you kill them, you would face capital punishment and if you don't kill them, they will kill you).
