My SEO skills suck. I mean they are bad. I was actually looking for a service to do SEO but I notice too many of them charge far too much for what they are giving out. The price of their services are aimed towards successful sites and not the smaller sites that could use their skills. So it comes down to a topic of affordability but I prefer to make it a topic of trust. A lot of us are in the same boat. We own forums and we try to get ahead in anyway that we can....so who do you trust to give you affordable SEO? Is it you? Is it a service? Is it a person? Perhaps I can find someone who can help me via your experiences!

No one. Focus on good content, do everything else well, and search engines will give you good rankings naturally. I don't trust anyone to give me "SEO services" - so many are blackhat or borderline if not entirely and the ones that aren't are hardly worth my time or money. No thank you.

I don't trust anyone, simply because I do not have anyone that does my SEO for me. I have a wordpress site and because it's already SEO optimized, all I need to do is add the content, download a SEO plugin to help get the process started a tad quicker and to expand the tools that Wordpress already has, and boom. 🙂
Performing proper SEO is actually quite simple. It's continuing with the quality and UNIQUE content is the hard part. SEO takes time, just post as you always do and just be sure to post a good amount of original content on your forum and you will be fine.
As you're doing that, take some time to read into some SEO tips and tricks and follow you come across. Read into how to get some quality backlinks and don't go crazy with backlinking, just take your time and spread it out over time.
And most importantly of all, don't spam your link on a bunch of forums. blogs...etc this will hurt your ranking, and it will hurt bad. Google is much smarter these days, quality and content are king.

Everything I needed regarding SEO I had to learn on my own. I never even considered trusting some other company to handle it, because any amount of money I would have paid for it would've been too expensive, IMO.
If I wanted to know how to do something SEO related, I usually looked it up online in the form of a question. Chances are, no matter what that question is, someone else already asked about it on a message board somewhere, and someone already answered the question.

Definitely try to do your own research like others have said so you can do it yourself. So many companies out there are just money hungry and don't do much that you can't do yourself.

It depends on the services you're using. But if you cant afford the services or you dont trust them then you can do whitehat methods by yourself, or hire an article writing service to help you with good content.
If you cant afford services in SEO, then you can do it yourself using whitehat methods for unique content (you can hire an article writing service to help you with content). But if you do get someone to do your SEO work for you, then you better make sure they're good at it and that they're not using blackhat methods.
I try to research SEO techniques and optimize my site myself and with the help of various plugins. There's a lot of good how-to's and tutorials for beginners. I use MySEO for MyBB in particular and it has some features such as meta descriptions/keywords, friendly URLS, and sitemap generation.
