I've always believed that you need a clear direction set at the start of the site that is allowed to be "nudged" by the user base and other staff. Granted certain items like cosmetic looks and UI changes should incorporate users more and more, but the core site purpose needs to avoid getting watered down and generic.

I agree with this!! The owner's vision should stand firm until he himself determines that it's best to change to something different.
