Ok, this forum has a less than pleasing theme, and is on an even more ugly forum software (Proboards): http://cherubseries.proboards.com/index.cgi
Yet still, it has over 17k members and over one million posts. Most paid hosted forums with a TLD will be lucky to get that large, if they even do.
What does this prove? Good management and good content are far more important than software, domains and themes.
