I have been using free hosted forums for almost 2 years. I have 2 forums, one which is around 11 months old, and 1, that is 8 days old. I am used ro free hosted forums. They don't all die.

If you put it that way, Wober (first in my mind) is about half that age, and it has 130 thousand posts. Do your free forums have that many posts?
OOooo a shoutout. 😛
Yeah we've only been around since late Sept. and have never been on a free host. However it was on phpbb3 (free software) for the first couple months.

Obviously not. 😛

I didn't make a forum to get a million posts though. I made a forum to make friends. I am broke anyways, I am not really interested in buying a domain. My forum only has 35,000 posts in 2 times the amount of time of what took Wober to get 130,000.

Sorry if it sounded bad in a way. But I'm saying you could have had more members, and more activity if you weren't on free forums. I'm sure those would stay longer and have better online relations.

@theezy, :great:

I do not think free forums can be blamed for all of it.

Empty statement. 🙂 So what can?

I didn't place 100% blame on free forums, but it was a main contributor. Free forums comes with the whole package of bad subdomain, poor design etc.

I am not saying free forums did not contribute towards it but I do know abit more about this than meets the eye.

The problem with most ad boards is they look too similar from each other as most offer very similar services. The only place you could really excel is the quality of the service and not the service itself which is hard to earn a reputation for quality work as few want to take a chance with a new promotion board without an established reputation.

Also there were plenty of ad boards on Invisionfree back in the day circa 2006-2009 such as Advertisement Centre, Madads and Hireem that were around for over a year to almost three so being on a free host has nothing to do with it. It's how well run the community is and how well you know what you are using. A paid forum software is worthless if the user owning the license knows nothing on how to use it.

There is a forum (I'm not mentioning the name) that copied ForuMansion and Club Fair Share, and then became extremely active. They're still open today. That's what I hate about these new promotion forums; many of them are so unoriginal that it's not even funny.

I'm not sick of 'em. New promotion forums have several advantages in my eyes.

Takes me a few seconds to register and post my same old ad. And if it gets me just one new member, it's worth it. Plus, assuming they do have some staff, I'm ordering Posting Package services from a wide variety of different people. Extra posts really really come in handy. And can make all the difference in activity. If the forum was only very small, and closed down pretty quickly, I still have the advantage of knowing the owner and some members there (especially if I was a staff member). New friends means new people who you can probably persuade to join up with you...as a staff member or a normal member. Maybe they don't cut it as an Owner, but they may cut it quite a bit as different type of staff member.

Personally, I don't think enough people appreciate just what they're being given. When I first started up as a webmaster 8 years ago, free advertising CERTAINLY wasn't this abundant. And a webmaster / forum owner who truly wants to succeed takes advantage of all the opportunities they get.

That being said, I do acknowledge that many are created for the wrong reasons. And a lot of them pretty much are FP knock-offs, but without the members. But unless I see one as truly copycat dishonorable jerks, that's not going to stop me.

You got to think of it, if a free host gets shut down / dies so does your forum.
Well, that could be said for any host if you don't have a backup, and same with domains.

With free hosts it is harder to get backups though. Some are impossible to get backups from (such as forumotion)

The reason I am sick of new promotion forums as 90% of them seem to be on forumotion. And its nearly impossible to run a forum on a free forum host because you are limited, but your even more limited with promotion forums as forums and normally very edited if they are a promotion forum 😉

I too have seen the recent growth of forumotion promotion forums. Whats up with that?

I don't know what it is about that but that bar at the bottom really irritates me to great lengths.

I would never be part of any forum on forumotion and especially promotion forums as they all seem to look the same and that is not appealing and non professional looking.

Well who would really join a crappy version of phpBB2 anyway?

It's because at forumotion support forum, there is a section for advertising their forums. There isn't really that much competition so people think (blindly) that there mustn't be many promotion forums so they decide to make one. Also, Rok's forumotion promotion forum is probably the biggest forumotion promotion forum, so people decide to copy him and whatnot.

well that not the only reason forumotion has a points mod on it and on freeforums you have to pay to get a points mod
