Why aren't Linus Trovald and Richard Stallman well known?

I think they are not well known because the media does not want to talk about Linus, and Richard because they both aren't super rich like other Operating System makers (Bill, Steve, IBM OS/2).

Because those are the most popular operating systems. Most people haven't even heard of Linux or Unix (people that aren't computer savvy).

Simple reason (in my opinion), marketing!
Why is Photoshop so popular? Good marketing.
How come Apple is regarded as the beast whereas Andriod serves better? Marketing.

To do a good marketing campaign, the most thing you need is money.
Just like you said, they aren't rich.
I only downloaded Linux a couple of times to test some stuff. If i recall linux will always be free?

Free = no money = no marketing = nobody knows about them.

I guest Richard viewpoint on non-free proprietary software and content restricting the user freedoms may make the News or even Documentary talk about him less then people with more capitalistic viewpoints like Bill, or Steve since the News and Media like CBS does not like it when people share/record, upload their videos to YouTube, or edits their video by putting background music and special effects before uploading it to YouTube because it is all copyrighted.

Another reason is that they might not want to be in the media and well known like bill gates and steve jobs.

I have public speaking fears and am shy, especially around people with cameras, so i dont blame them.

Don't forget, they support free software, which big companies do not, and the media like everything else is run by companies and most likely don't want people supporting free stuff on tv.

I think another reason that Linus, and Richard not wanting to be well known is open source software rely a lot on its strong group of mostly volunteers who code for free on their free time to make and update the Linux OS rather then getting paid by a boss like Bill and Steve to code for pay.

I agree with your point about the media. I read online that old media like TV, Print, etc dislike free publicity from social media as well like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube for posting content since no one has to pay for promoting their own content and products on Social media since the website is ad supported unlike television advertisement which cost thousands or more for a short commercial, and the viewer have to pay the cable company to subscribe to Cable TV like HBO, CBS, and Disney.
