Why do people hate on phpBB?

Actually because SMF is better and free.

It's not worse, it has better themes than MyBB, phpBB.
Has quite a lot of good mods, Portals etc.

All it needs now is a like system which is being made by a member of SMF.

It has a form of like and Rep system, it has Karma, and it has post ratings, what more do you want ?

However I moved from phpBB to Xenforo because of the updates issues, and the need to wait for MODS to be upgraded when the core software has a line of code changed.

There are too many people involved in developing phpBB, and the old adage of too many cooks, is very true,

No do what you think best, don't let everyone let you down about different forum software's.
People have different taste, I'm using SMF because it has a better background than any other free forum software.

Regular updates, mods, themes etc.
Big community behind SMF as well.

It is worse... in your opinion. This is all opinion based. People have different opinions and reasons for liking different software. Posts like that are not really helpful as you are providing no reasons why you feel that way about SMF and it comes across as if you are saying that their opinion is wrong which does appear a bit rude.

SMF Is just superbad, it's bloated and the style is disgusting.

Not that bad, but if you want to wait 2-3seconds for a page refresh, while posting on a forum. That's fine and dandy, let me tell you one thing though, speed > features.

My statement still stands strong that SMF is worse why? I just posted above. All forum software today is bloated and horrible, your best bet is to use fluxbb or punbb and customize it the way you want. forumpromotion is probably the only forum that uses phpbb3 to it's max potential. (I Like that, and that's why I am here). But I think it's safe to say, more then 80% of all boards running SMF OR PHPBB or vbulletin or xenforo or IPB, don't even use more then half of the features!! Where does the rest of that go? it comes from your wallet for paying for unused bandwidth/etc that's not even used.

Try running vbulletin or smf or phpbb on a VPS with less then 120MB Ram usage with 20users online, it just wont happen. You will be paying 20x more with bloated software like that.

My recommendations are punbb or fluxbb or IPB 2.1 and below. All the other crap is crap...

Unless you can customize your vbulletin or phpbb or ipb or SMF so it runs fast, it will be worthless to have it, hence it will be slow as snails (Like I stated above)

Just my 2 cents, the forum software companies are making there software more bloated and bloated and ridiculously overpriced and ridiculously over featured... this is how I feel anyway, that's why I made my own :biggrin: :biggrin:

Anyways to actually contribute, both Phpbb and SMF have their downs, I don't really think they are very comparable.

Also, who the heck uses less than 120 mb of ram? I'm pretty sure no one uses Windows 1 anyone.

There's nothing to hate on, its all preference and personally it's my favorite. I like it because you can easily add and edit you own code. The code isn't that hard to understand and edit. This is what makes it the best.

Also lets not forget how many people follow phpbb and update it. If you don't think they update phpbb enough, your wrong.
