On about 20 or so sites now(all from FP) people put a little button on there front page but the forum on /forum or /forums or /something.
If the forum is the main site why not make it the index page?

Yes that's one reason.
But I find it irritating and it doesn't make me want to even look at there site.

Perhaps, they don't know about redirects.
I find it irritating too. If they planned to put homepage afterwards, they should redirect domain root to /forums

I don't mind if people don't have their forum index as the site home page (we don't here on FP). However, it really annoys me when I visit a forum site and it is difficult to find the "Forum" link on the homepage and I have actually seen lots of sites like that.

FP has welcome and info page in root. That looks professional.

But glock mentions that he finds it annoying when sites has only an white page with a link like "Visit our Forum" in the root, and then have forum at a different directory.

I mean just a button in the middle of a white page that says forum.

Kinda like a splash page? I have been wanting to put one of those on one of my forums but I just never got around to doing it.

I do not like it either. I hate trying to find the location to the forum.

I find it useful if there is more than just the forum, like a blog or a youtube channel or a facebook in addition to the forum, after all I can bookmark the forum page in my computer and skip the splash if I visit often solely for the community boards.

I don't see it as that big of a deal although I'd prefer for them to just make it their usual domain if they aren't going to utilize it for anything else.
