Why do some people call hard drive, hard disk instead?

HDD - Hard Disk Drive - so, since us Europeans are lazier, we call it Hard Disk. Makes sense 😀

How are we lazier? American English has a lot of words with the 'U' missing, for example color. 😛

Don't even get me started how lazy Americans (citizens of USA) are...

Meh that's a stereotype.

Now if you will excuse me I am going to go eat an entire cake then take a 7 hour nap and quit my job. 😀

I don't know if it is correct grammar or not, but it made me smile. 😀

It should be;

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to eat an entire cake and then take a seven hour nap. Then I'll quite my job.

But on topic, I think 'hard disk' is an American idiom (no I'm not calling Americans idiots, although if you think I just did then maybe... 😉) so it would make more sense that North-America would call is a hard disk and other continents such as Europe call it hard drives (which is what I call them).

Probably the same as how some people in certain countries say Colour, while others say color.
As well as some say Grey and others say Gray.
It really just depends on the country, I'd say and their customs.

I always thought it went back to the days of floppy drives to help differentiate them from hard drives by giving them simple names that made sense as floppies were flexible yet hard drives were not. Yeah I know that technically 3 1/2" floppies were hard plastic but still called floppies.

What gets me is sometimes people will call the console (or case) the hard drive (or CPU) when that is not what it is at all. Both the hard drive and CPU are parts in the box, not the box itself. I even had one guy argue me one time that it was called a modem!

But yeah I think they were called hard drives only so they could be easily distinguished from the common (at that time) floppies.

I don't know, whenever someone says hard disk it makes it sound like they have a disk that they want to insert into the computer.

The correct name for them is a Hard Disk Drive. They consist of multiple platters, which are disks. Those disks are hard.

As far as the name of Hard Drive or Hard Disk is concerned I'd state that it was a personal preference and has become de facto.

I've personally always stated them as "HDD's" or Hard Drive when non technically minded people are around me.

this is a great answer to the question

hard disk drives (hdd) is the technical name, hard drives are for short
