The internet is littered with hundreds, maybe even thousands of once very popular and active forums that have all these amazing and useful posts. But check the date on last post (on some of the subforums) and you will see the post was made a year or two ago. Just wondering why such useful forums would go inactive. After all, they have good content, which is supposedly the one magic ingredient that would keep a forum alive and members actively posting. Also, if a forum is so very inactive, why would the owner choose to leave it open? What could they actually gain?

When the community as a whole doesn't interact with each other anymore is when a forum dies.

I'm sure each forum owner would be able to give you the story. Or possibly they are as mystified as the casual visitor. An abandoned forum is like a ruined city almost. All the evidence of life is there, but it's all past fossils.
Sometimes the owner loses interest, or becomes pre occupied with other things, gets in a position where they no longer have the time...

I've come across forums that are like that. It's a big shame, all their hard work for eventually nothing. 🙁

I guess they just lose interest, and and if people come across an inactive forum, they are less likely to join and post around. I personally would shutdown the forum if it suddenly went inactive (with no hope of it getting active again in the future, of course).

In cases I've experienced it first hand, it's because the staff left or became inactive due to other commitments and not enough people were suitable as replacements. The other issue is if new members are there to replace older ones. If people move on and no one is there to fill the gaps, eventually the gap gets so big it becomes a problem. Just because your forum is awesome, doesn't mean everyone will stay. People move on in life for various reasons, and you have to expect all the time people on your forum will leave some day, and so if you aren't trying to entice new members, the community slowly kills itself.

Inactivity.Admins have to do something about it.I guess it's hard to make a forum active with just one or two users. But, just posting some interesting topics, now and then may help the forum a lot.
