I been using Blogger for 3 years almost for one of my blogs and found it to be a great service. It does all the things I want it to do which is display my posts in an easy to read fashion and allows me to use Adsense to earn a few extra dollars.

I don't really get why so many people slam on Blogger. If you have the skills you can customize it .

Blogger is very, very, very limited in what you can do. Are you able to change a Blogger blog into an article directory? I don't think so, but in Wordpress you can. Blogger is very limited in the amount of coding you can edit. It's just the xHTML mainframe and that's all you can edit, whereas in Wordpress, you can edit every single page as you please.

It doesn't matter how much skills you have, there will always be a work-stopping limitation which Wordpress could have differed.

"Why do some Wordpress owner make fun of Blogger?"

Probably for the same reasons why self-hosted forum owners make fun of free-hosted forums.

Really though, I've rarely seen what you stated.

I just hear "Blogger as unprofessional" or some other negative statement a lot from blogger's videos on Youtube and from random posts I find online like this one.

I was talking about customizing the template mainly in Blogger not so much turning blogger into an article directory.

There are a lot of nice templates for blogger if you know how to install them.

http://mashable.com/2007/09/13/blogger-templates/

But, I think it is kind of weird that hardly anyone mention Xanga, Typepad, LiveJournal, etc or just say something general like all "free-hosted blogs are bad".

I like how Blogger lets you easily add plug-ins and widgets in the sidebar with HTML scripts you copied from Twitter's Widget site. Blogspot also let you create up to 10 static pages for posting your about section, privacy policy, mailing list, etc.

It lets you make a backup of all your template and posts and save it as a XML file. Blogger seems like a great free service.

Blogger doesn't allow the same customization, plug ins, themes, and ability to edit content. plus you can have access to your files. no competition at all.

I agree you do not have access to your files in blogger via FTP, but your picture files are stored on http://picasaweb.google.com account everytime you upload pictures to Blogger and you can backup your posts and blogger template at any time.

I find the free membership blogs at http://wordpress.com has more limits then http://blogger.com .

For example, you can't have Advertisements on your Free Wiordpress.com blog while Blogspot allows Adsense and Infolinks
http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/

I find you can't really customize the themes or install custome plug-ins on Wordpress.com hosted blog Free blogging sevice in the sidebar, header, footer like Blogger.com layout editor.

Custom domain option for a wordpress.com blog is kind of expensive since I can get a cheaper domain from GoDaddy or 1and1 with a promo code and use my Domain name on Blogger without paying Blogger a fee unlike Wordpress.com http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/

However, I love the self-hosted Wordpress.org is a good option for people with webhosting and a domain name since it is very customizable with plug-ins, themes, and other customizations.

I was talking about Wordpress.org, ie. self-hosted blogs, not the free blog. Of course you get limitations with all free services, but at the end of the day, WP can provide it's self-hosted software and Blogger cannot, which is an essential key in how you end up succeedin (but not saying you can't succeed with Blogger).

On another note, (I far prefer WordPress,) Blogger is certainly professional, I've seen several small/medium sized companies used it as a form of connecting to users. Just because something's free doesn't make it unprofessional - take Twitter, or Facebook.

The professionalism you are talking about is not comparable to the "Blogger" type of professionalism. Since a blog is your own website, having a freely hosted website "sounds" unprofessional (if it's only a decent blog), whereas a Twitter account or Facebook account is being part of a community of social networkers. You can't compare them.

You can get a domain name for your Blogger making it look more professional since I find domain names are better for SEO instead of blogspot subdomains.

Blogger is more of a social network blog these days like Tumblr since you can easily search, follow, share, report abuse, etc with the Little toolbar on the top of most blogspot blogs. Blogger allows other Blogspot readers and Google members to easily post comments and follow your blogspot blog if they are a blogspot member which I think every google account is since once you create a gmail account. It also creates other google accounts for you if you log into their services like Youtube, Buzz, etc.

Most of Google's blog run on Blogspot like
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/ which is really professional.

Also there is a "next blog" button for people who just want to browse random blogs.

I think it is the content which makes a blog more professional and the domain name.

In my opinion I think it's because blogger is very limited to what you can do. Sure if you know html and css there are things you can still manipulate in blogger, but you can't make changes like you can in Wordpress.

And when it comes to plugins. Blogger - 0 Wordpress - more than 0.

Now, I'm not against people using blogger because if someone doesn't want to have to go into the hard code to manipulate a blog, blogger would be best because then later on should you want to place ads on your blog, your free to do so.

So I'm fine with a person using either Wordpress or Blogger/Blogspot.

I think Wordpress.org is the best self-hosted blog software because it is the simplest to customize compared to Drupal and Joomla in my exp.

However, Blogspot is the best free blog service since it is not as restrictive when it comes to allowed content you can even post porn as long as it is not "illegal porn".

"Adult Content: We do allow adult content on Blogger, including images or videos that contain nudity or sexual activity. But, please mark your blog as 'adult' in your Blogger settings. Otherwise, we may put it behind a 'mature content' interstitial."
http://www.blogger.com/content.g

I find Blogger to be the least restrictive free blog since members can put their own Advertising code for Adsense and Infolinks on a blog while many free blogs make money from their member content and traffic by putting ads on their blog. Blogspot also offer a lot of tips for earning money with a blog.

Blogspot also have a nice search engine for Amazon Associates in the post editor, so Amazon Affiliates can easily search Amazon associates for image and text affiliate links for promoting Amazon products.

Blogspot is a good blog service for Youtubers to keep in touch with their subscribers since the majority of their subscribers can easily make or have a Blogger account with their existing Gmail account they use to sign into YT to follow YT partners blogs in Blogger homepage when they log-in kind of like Twitter.

It is also nice that Blogspot let user edit the HTML and CSS codes for their template while some free blogs don't let members have access to the HTML or CSS codes for templates, so it is easier yo position ads a certain way.

It used to be owned by Pyra Labs till Google bought Pyra labs in 2003.

I agree, some people might not like Blogger because they dislike Google for unindexing their website or ranking it "very low on page 10+" because they used their website for piracy, spamming, phishing, black hat seo and other illegal/unethical activity which Google discovered.

A small percentage of people tend to hate Google products because they got banned from Adsense, Adword, or some other service.

As already stated Blogger is just so, so limited compared to Wordpress. That's got to be the main reason.

You know, I disagree. I think Blogger is so stern in terms of customisation it's more like notes on Facebook rather than your own website.

Blogger is limited to what you can do, like I have seem some comments say. As WP is more advanced.
