If you have to ask that quetion, then you don't understand what SEO is.
SEO is a simple but complex subject, which in itself sounds contradictory, and what I mean is that it is easy to do, but difficult to understand what does exactly work.
What a lot of people tell you is pure hypothesis, and educated guesswork, no-one is 100% sure how Googles algorithm's work, and no-one who works for Google will tell you, all you can do is glean information from different sources and put it all together like a jigsaw.
SEO is in a nutshell trying to understand Google, and then using that understanding to "cheat" your way up the rankings.
Google then spends a lot of money developing ways to stop you "cheating".
So it's a vicious circle.
SEO is all about :
Content ( original)
Backlinks ( links to your site from relevant sites to increase your rank)
Robots.txt ( telling Google where not to go, this makes your site more "search engine friendly")
Relevance ( content relevant to your niche)
Meta tags ( a system search engines use to pull information from your site, and then index it)
Anchor Text ( a way of formatting a URL, so that Search engines associate that word with your URL)
Keywords or Key Phrases ( Words or phrases that users may input into search engines to find sites in a certain niche)
Traffic (The amount of users clicking on your site, the deeper they go, the better it is)
alt tags ( An alt tag is the description of an image, that tells search engines what it is a picture of)
And probably 50 more things that I can't remember right now !
