Sites that rely on content which was scraped or copied from another site are likely to get penalized or excluded from Google search. And, the reason being, Google figures if your site is just a copy, why bother including it in the search since most users would rather visit the original site where the content originated anyway.

For this type of site, you might be relying on software to draw an RSS feed of content (such as product descriptions/titles, etc) from another site.

Even though you might have permission to use the content, Google will just see it as scraped content and will determine that your site is just another thin affiliate site.

This also applies to sites, where the site owner goes to article directories and manually copies articles to publish on their own site or uses an RSS plug in on site to draw articles onto his own pages. Some article directories let you do this as it benefits their users. If that same content is published on 100 other sites, then it's not really serving any purpose on your site as it just makes your site a duplicate of so many others. And, in that situation Google considers your site to be redundant in search listings.

If you own an affiliate site or one that relies on RSS feeds for product images or descriptions, you can supplement your site's pages by including your own written descriptions; adding reviews from customers or wiki pages that enhance and augment the content on your site.

If you don't have permission to use another person's content, this is considered illegal scraping and should be discontinued as it can result in copyright violation and even lawsuit. Many sites practicing illegal scraping get excluded from Google search as a result of a DMCA take down.
