I suppose all copies of that version of SMF have a slight bug in them (Not sure if its latest, didnt bother to check meh).

Well, that's really down to personal opinion.

There's nothing on the SMF website / community to suggest there is a security vulnerability. I actually spent a while looking around their forum a few days ago (when you first posted this topic) and from what I saw the place is being run by a bunch of kiddys. No kind of professionalism whatsoever, just random stuff and general sillyness.

I would imagine they've installed something or changed a setting which has caused their own fatality. ~neutral~

Fyi, wasn't anything they did. Theres an unreported exploit in the newest SMF, and its been there for awhile now. I dont know details (so dont ask -roll- ) but I do know that it works (example, them).
