The anti-secrecy organization WikiLeaks posted thousands of documents Tuesday purporting to reveal CIA hacking secrets, including suggestions that the spy agency is able to turn smart televisions into listening devices and defeat encrypted communications apps such as Signal or WhatsApp.

NBC News has not verified the authenticity of the documents, but computer experts and former intelligence officials were treating them as real. A CIA spokesman declined to comment.

"We do not comment on the authenticity or content of purported intelligence documents," the CIA's Jonathan Liu told NBC News.

As part of its release, WikiLeaks made the extraordinary claim that the CIA "lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal," including a series of tools that experts say could be turned against Americans. U.S. officials would neither confirm nor deny that allegation.

What do you all think about this? I dislike the fact that WikiLeaks will do anything to release confidential information that isn't supposed to be released publically, but it is nice to get a confirmation on what I knew the CIA could already do.

I posted a thread about this in Intellectual Talk. Also Wikileaks has said this is only 1% of the information they plan to release. So I look forward to the rest, but I agree with JFK that the CIA needs to be defunded and tore apart and let go. The CIA is evil and no longer serves a purpose for the US.

Honestly, I think we all kind of understood what these people are capable of. After Snowden, the NSA etc. If you want to at least try to get around these things, you really need to be using TOR, probably a VPN on top of it, etc. There are certainly ways to protect yourself, but they hinder your internet experience. A lot. So it's all really a double-edged sword...

You kind of just have to be torn on the issue. Hard not to be. :/

If you don't think the government can (and will) obtain whatever they want about whoever they want, you're lying to yourself.

I actually have some more on this.

William Binney, NSA whistleblower: “At least 80% of fiber-optic cables globally go via the US". This is no accident and allows the US to view all communication coming in. At least 80% of all audio calls, not just metadata, are recorded and stored in the US. The NSA lies about what it stores."
