I think computer class in the future might use laptops, or tablets (with keyboard docks/case) in the future since they can be a few hundred dollars cheaper then a full desktop which also need a separate monitor, mouse, keyboard, webcam, and other accessories which can cost 700-1000 dollar per desktop computer including the cost for accessories and software like operating system, office suite, etc.

15 years ago in college we used laptops not desktops but then again I went to a top tier college. Schools in the states today are pretty much using laptops and we have seen a few high schools integrate the tablet into some of the tech courses.

Re: Will computer class always use desktops vs laptop, table

More college students even in community and junior college seem to like to bring their own laptop, netbook, and tablets to school instead of using the schools desktop computers since the computer at school feel slow because a lot of the software is run off a server and streamed to the desktop over the network via thin client computing or the internet which can be slow if a lot of people are watching YouTube videos, or streaming big programs like Office Suites, and Photoshop at the same time.

Plus, if the server randomly reboots, or crashes then your unsaved work might be gone as well if you did not save to a USB flash drive or the desktop drives.

It also feels more private having and using your own laptop or netbook instead of the school desktop which could be monitored with parental control/monitoring software.

I feel that if you have laptops and tablets in your classrooms you really don't have a high quality computer class. Desktops are superior in performance, and will always be my preference 😉

LoL I'm not a troll but apparently you have not worked with a toughbook, a walking desktop. I get your meaning though I think a compilation of all three is the best vice just any one platform

See I don't see people using things like that when they're on the go. Ultrabooks/macbook air are in style now and those are all about convenience and weight; My ideal setup would be something like a macbook air for classes and a desktop at home. A heavy laptop doesn't do me any good.

Re: Will computer class always use desktops vs laptop, table

My whole school uses mini laptops provided for us to keep, so I'm going with laptops.

Re: Will computer class always use desktops vs laptop, table

I'm happy with just a basic slim laptop which is not too heavy, but have a decent size keyboard that I can type notes with, do basic tasks like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, e-mail, and the storage drive is flash memory storage, so if I drop the laptop I won't lose all my data because the hard drive crashed like mechanical hard drives when dropped.

I prefer a computer with a full keyboard when I'm at home since it is easiest to type on the keyboard, and the monitor is more easy to watch movies and game on for long periods of time.

Well, they did invent that desktop (I mean the table-like thing) with a tablet build in, so why not something like that?

Anyways, I don't think that tablets will take over computer classes. They're damn annoying to do serious stuff on.

My Network+ traning course I am in uses laptops with docking stations attached over desktops.

I do also see Laptops being used more and more in general at other schools aswell. Hell even tablets are now being used in certain "higher up" schools.

I think virtualization, remote desktop, thin client computing where software is run over the network or internet via powerful servers can make less powerful Tablet feel more like a desktop when you have a USB or Bluetooth keyboard or mouse connected to it.

Some tablets also has Mini-HDMI output to connect to a bigger monitor or HDTV.

I think if you connect/tether a Keyboard and Mouse to an iPad 2, New iPad, Asus Transformer Prime, and more powerful tablets the user experience would be like a Netbook and Laptop experience for the average non-power user, but with a smaller screen.

You can also use Windows 7 on iPad via Remote Desktop like CItrix.

Windows 8 and possibly some Linux based desktops with a tablet OS like Android could make the tablet experience better with voice to text, video recording, and connecting a keyboard and mouse would make it easier for common users to use tablets for creation.

I can see them using laptops, tablets I cannot.
