The Forum for pages offers a clean, easy to navigate interface with the advantage of being on the Facebook site, so users won't have to register again. It may be possible to use this type of forum to promote a specific product (such as linking to a Facebook page or site that offers the product) or have a niche forum which has links to affiliate sites promoting talked about products.
Have you considered starting a Forum for Pages on Facebook?
I know vbulletin 4 has an add-on that allows you to access your forum directly on the facebook page, also monetize it. But this is the first I've seen of this.
It's actually a really neat concept from what I've read about it. Personally though I'd rather keep my forum and its facebook page separate. I use FB for advertising from my sites FB page, and the forum for all communications and such. Just easier that way. A lot of people don't use facebook any more nor have they ever.
I have just known that there is a forum in Facebook, haha. I guess that means forums have been widely acknowledged for even Facebook to integrate it in their services. It looks very simple, though.
Personally, if you have time to set up a Facebook forum, you may as well bring it to slightly higher level. At least free forum hosting because I believe we can do much more than in Facebook forum. But I guess Facebook forum will have easier connection to other Facebook services, so if your target audience is Facebook users you may consider this one.
