I'm buying a new i7 desktop replacement notebook rig (costing an arm and a leg and the gloves and shoes with them), and I'm wondering what OS you'd run on it. Bearing in mind I'm a Windows user, of course.

I've gotten word from friends using Windows 7 at the moment that their computer gets the BSOD every hour or so. That's useless haha. So I'm thinking of using Vista for now.

Also, with the promotion of a free upgrade to 7 in October for any new machines with Vista, I think a 64bit copy of Vista is the way to go.

What's everyone's experience/thoughts on which OS to go for?

I'd say go Vista just to be safe, but make sure your processor is 64bit capable first. 😛

I have/am using Windows 7 in a live environment, play games on it and I have never had a BSOD. Your friends are obviously using wrong drivers, probably video drivers for Vista 32bit.

Vista drivers work on Windows 7 but it isn't supported. Also, remember it is only an evaluation copy, what did your friends expect? A perfect working operating system that will do anything? That'll only come at SP1 + maybe.

I would say go with Vista. Vista is not anywhere near as bad as alot of people make out and as Traygon mentioned, Windows 7 is still in RC stages so it isn't going to work seamlessly and for something massive like an operating system it would be better to go with something that is established rather then something that hasn't been fully released yet.

I have vista. I only have it because my computer came with it. I am not picky. As long as it works, Im good. 😀

If you can manage that upgrade deal, go for it. Not only would you get Vista to play with, but then you'd get 7 free, and if you hate it there should be an included downgrade disk (was with XP -> Vista).

In general it does take a few service packs to get everything right on a Windows system, and by that time there's another OS released and the one after that in beta -.-

I use the Windows 7 RC and so far no problems have come from it, I would say go with Vista though as you officially cant get 7 yet. Plus if you get the free upgrade you wont lose much.

I have tested the Windows 7 RC and I can say it beats vista, but xp will always be my fav 😛.

So I suggest going Windows 7 😀.

I am running a dual boot with Xp and Windows 7. I must say I absolutely love Windows 7! Never one bit of problems. Boots fast, low overhead on system resources and best of all it supports DirectX 10.

It is everything Vista is except that it is fast and works! Vista is junk, MS knows it. That is why Windows 7 was so quick to development. In time I see Vista being compared to W7 as a beta much the way Millennium Edition was for XP.

The real shame of it though is Microsoft will charge Vista users for upgrades even though they know it was broke.

Bottom line is this...Vista is on its way out. If you are getting a new machine you might as well get the newest OS out there.

Couldn't agree more with your post at all.

your friend needs to fix his PC then because in every review and person (including myself) who have used and tested windows 7 has never had a bsod

also bsods are typically caused by hardware or driver faults which isn't typically the fault of the OS (although it should be able to deal with it)

I am thinking your friend has a driver issue as well. Because W7 is only in RC right now not all drivers are available yet. I know I cannot use my Killer Nic card with it, I must use the onboard network card.

Once the final comes out all the driver issues should be fixed up.

The funny thing is with Windows 7 is that its not NT version 7.

Vista was NT version 6, and they have named Windows 7 NT version 6.1

Its just a small upgrade from Vista, so when someone says its so much better than Vista, Vista is crap you are actually running Vista with some minor changes to it. The whole operating system is Vista. :shake:
