Can anyone tell me more about the OS, Windos 7 Starter? I got a new HP Mini 210-3050NR netbook, having trouble getting around it.

Help please.

Starter you cant set a background, you cant do a lot with starter. You might want to look into getting the OS upgraded or use some other method to upgrade it.

It's the sucky version of Windows 7. I have it on my netbook too and hate it. I miss being able to change my desktop wallpaper every other day. lol.

I am going to upgrade it to Windows 7 Professional once I get the money to get the disk

I have never used it. Every time I get a new computer I always upgrade to the Pro version. By the sounds of it I am glad that I do, I have no clue what I would do if I couldn't have my girls pics for my wall paper.

You don't need to upgrade, there are ways to gain full features.
As in, you can enable aero, enable your own desktop image and all the important features like that.

You can enable Aero on Starter? 😱

Getting a higher version of Win 7 on a netbook might cause problems as the reason you have Starter to start with is because netbooks can't handle the full OS like a regular laptop or desktop can (or so I've been told).

There might be some registry hacks, and third party programs like http://www.stardock.com/products/windowblinds/ which let you change the background and theme in Windows 7 Basic.

Windows 7 Home Premium or higher on a Netbook might cause slow downs since the CPU is usually an Intel Atom CPU, the RAM is also less 1-2GB, and slower speeds then most full fledge laptops, and the video card is slower on netbooks.

Yeah, speeds are definitely slower. I'm ready to shoot this thing if it goes any slower. lol.

I downloaded a program named Oceanis to use my Grand Canyon photos in the background.

I'd definitely look for registry hacks. Might be worth looking at an upgrade...

There are ways around to pretty much everything. For example, if you google changing wallpaper in windows 7 starter, there are patches that will let you do it. 🙂

Don't hack there are some real bad hacks out there (mostly from India, the Middle East and China). You have a stripped down version of Win7 basic.

You should have received a coupon or option to upgrade at a slight discount. Keep in mind you have a mini do you really need to upgrade? Functionality on mini's are somewhat limited, there may not be a need for a full version of Win7.

Congrats on your purchase but you may not need the upgrade, use the funds for something else because most minis can't really handle the full blown version and they are not really supposed to.
