Hi guys,

I'm having a bit of a problem trying to decide wether I should install Windows XP or Chrome OS on a new lightweight PC of mine. It's only DDR1 (512MB) and a 3.2ghz Pentium 4 so I can't run anything too powerful on this. I'm also open to Linux suggestions if you have any. (I only paid $30 for this machine 😉)

Thanks to anyone who helps me out! 🙂

lol only 3.2GHz?
Get more RAM and that is like super pc. 😀
but i'd say windows xp. Chrome OS is literally just an internet browser -.-

Well, the problem is it's DDR1 and no one manufactures it anymore. It's just stockpiles of it being sold for much more then it's worth. The system only supports a maximum of 2GB. I also had forgot to mention that just an internet browser is essentially what I want. Windows XP would just give me the bonus of being able to Skype with someone if I wanted to and such.

Too bad you're not at my house. I have a bit of DDR memory just sitting around. I could probably get you up to at least 1 GB. 🙁

Anyway, I would just go for Windows XP. Those specs are more than enough to run Windows XP (at the time Windows XP was released, 512MB was "optimal").

Ah! 🙁 I also checked crucial this morning 2GB is $60! Outrageous! Maybe we can work out a deal 😀.

How many memory slots are on the motherboard? Do you know?

Two. I have two 256mb cards in it right now and two more in the closet.

I did purchase a 1gb stick myself but it's "high capacity" (something I've never heard of) and doesn't work with the chipset. Sigh, life is hard.

Well first off Chrome Os is linux based.. Second you can run skype on it aswell. For what you do Chrome OS should do just fine.

If you want a full desktop though Puppy Linux, Vector Linux, or Opensuse with LXDE would run great.

Yes, I think Debian is fine, but I heard it is a operating system which is not as easy to use as Puppy Linux, Linux Mint, OpenSuse, Lubuntu, and Ubuntu which are designed for Desktops, and the average-intermediate computer users.

I've already used Linux for about 3+ years and every VPS and dedicated of mine has always ran on Debian. So, I'm familiar with the command line too.

i'd go for XP if i were you. if you are into linux, maybe Bodhilinux or puppy linux derivative.

Xubuntu will do you wonders. OR if you want something SUPER snappy and fast try PuppyLinux 😀

I agree Xubuntu is pretty good. The XFCE desktop theme is pretty light weight, and easy to use.

Then shouldn't you have already known the answer? Idk I would think being a user of Linux for 3+ years you have have went distro hopping >.> .*I know I Did lol*
