Word Filters

I don't have a word filter on Hortorian and I never had one on Be Creative, which I ran previously. Now admittedly they are and were writing forums, and you do get a lot of swearing in literature. However even our non-writing forums do fairly well, regardless. Nobody seems to be offended when someone posts a swear word, and in most situations it's warranted.

Then you look at Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Bebo. I'd bet that at least 99% of forum users have used one of those, and a lot of people swear on them. So if swearing online is such a big deal that it has to be censored, then why don't you get complaints on every status that has that lovely four letter word?

I don't need to say how easy it is to get past word filters, do I? Discuss.

It depends on how it's used and the severity.

There is a forum being promoted here and I open one of their topics and certain comments aimed at certain groups of society really did offend me, especially when you see comments like: "(this group) are full of sh*theads" and this can go on for pages and pages. I can only wonder why the forum hasn't done so well, and is currently declining in activity.

If it's used non-derogatorily, eg. "yesterday, I stepped on some sh*t", then I couldn't care less about it because it's not used to offend anyone.

But especially in writing, if you are taking the persona of someone and swearing in a story or in a RPG forum, then it shouldn't matter because that's who you make them out to be.

No filters on my forum. We allow "bad words."
I blocked them out on previous forums but I was going for a more laid back thing this time around. Its too much of hassle trying to be the word police anyway. People should be comfortable in their speech. If the occasional curse word slips out, its not the end of the world.

I take things on a word by word basis. I let thngs go until I see something terrible and then act.
