Has anyone tried spreading the word about their site to friends? Has anyone used the social media mechanisms on various forums and blogs successfully in the pursuit of making a buzz? Note, forums, and blogs all have social media sharing buttons and, obviously, so do social media pages and groups themselves.

Yep, I told allot of people about my website. they choose to join or not. out of the list I had 5 that joined. made about one ot two posts and that's it. I chased up some of them saying hay be active but can't really force them.
Some of this stuff strikes me as being similar to the situation where you sign up for a get rich scheme and ask family and friends to join. It seems to be a desperation method, sort of like the donation model. It just doesn't really work statistically.

A site I used to be active on, had the most amount of activity when they had people go out to businesses and their friends to advertise the site to. And plus, if you place things like flyers and cards in public places where people will see it, it creates a bigger opportunity to make sure you get traffic.
