WordPress Forum/Community Plugins

I am wondering if anyone here has used WP w/ a plugin to host their own community forum. WordPress is obviously meant more for blogging and CMS features, but there are ways to use it to support communities. I have used some of these plugins in a limited capacity and am wondering if anyone else here has given them a go.

I think the most well known is probably bbPress - https://bbpress.org/
I don't think they are truly comparable to a dedicated forum software, so if many people have chosen to not use something like this I would not be surprised in the slightest. However, it is good to always explore every option and for those of you who are hosting blogs or news sites, this could be a solution that is more familiar to you than going with XenForo, MyBB, etc.

I believe @Nomad used to have a website that was a Wordpress blog and used bbpress for it's forum. I don't know if he still has this forum though. Joomla has a few plugins for forums too. I think they are missing features that standalone forum software offers, so bridging a Wordpress blog with a installation of a forum software would be better IMO.

Yes, I used to have a wordpress blog with a forum. I was using wpforo. I did try bbpress but I was more at ease with wpforo. It is really good for those who are new to the forums. You can manage everything from wordpress dashboard. There were a lot of limitations, therefore, when I was building another forum, I use wordpress for blog and forum software for the forum, instead of wordpress forum plugin

Merge what? Do you mean running wordpress blog and a forum on the same domain? I used main domain for blog and directory for the forum.

Using WP with plugins like bbPress can be a mixed bag, great for those familiar with WordPress, but it might not stack up against dedicated forum software. Still, if you're already in the WP ecosystem, it might be worth a shot to keep things simple and integrated.
