Would a forum which is about Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, and other social networking sites be hard to get traffic via search engines, direct traffic, and refferal traffic?
I think it might be kind of hard to get activity, members, or traffic if the main topic of your forum is about social networking sites unless it is about a sub-topic related to social networking like "Facebook Groups and Apps Promotion, or Customizing Facebook Group themes."

Yes, let's have a forum for a social forum (networks work like forums, vice versa). You might as well make a forum for users who use Facebook to talk to their friends on that foru-.. oh wait.
Re: Would a forum about social networking do well for traffi
I can see how, but you probably can't.
A forum can be about anything really, even a bad idea, it just needs a plan.
For example, your forum can talk about social networks, but why would anyone join? simply they won't! People don't want to use a forum, they want to use a social network, people who like social networks are not forum friendly! just a suggestion.
But wait, don't people want more likes, followers, and friends, well if you want them to come and visit your forum you add articles on how to promote a page and get 1,000+ or more likes, more followers, and more friends.
You would need experience using a social network, remember a forum is just a place to share words thus articles, and other things.
People don't understand this concept and usually fail.

I think a forum that covers the topic of social networking would be popular. For the average user it can give information about something they are not familiar with yet, for the marketer or webmaster it could give the opportunity to learn and share how to use social media platforms for marketing and website advertising more effectively.
The bottom question isn't whether it would be popular or work I think but more what type of person(s) you target. Teaching newbies about the new experience, allowing advertising outlets for seasoned marketers, allow those all knowledgeable to share their I've spent 20 hours a day on Facebook for the last 18 months and know everything from gaming, marketing, and making a big friends list types.
Facebook games are beyond popular at the moment, a section allowing everyone to share their experiences, ask for that stuff they are always needing would also be an excellent thing. How are people supposed to make Facebook friends if they are always just on Facebook?
Re: Would a forum about social networking do well for traffi
I think Facebook App and Game Developers might find a Facebook forum useful since the default forums on groups/pages on Facebook are not very good for talking about a wide range of topics since Facebook Group's forum don't have sub sections, search, pinned topics, or the ability to upload files like phpBB3, invision, vBulletin.
I think a Facebook Help for Newbie and Advance users forums might also work since I find Facebook rolls out changes more often to their privacy settings, chat, skype client, and other features, and finding help and support on Facebook.com can be hard sometimes.
But, I got a feeling, a large amount of Facebook users don't know how to browse, join or use forums since they are so used to the point and click and layout with tons of icons, and buttons and linking structures on Facebook and other social networks.

I don't know, a lot of old timers were used to usenet groups and moved on to forums, those types of folks may have a hard time transitioning over into something like Facebook, or see the purpose in a weird thing like Twitter...the forum they could deal with and use it to help acclimate over perhaps just a back of the mind theory...
