If you have a good product, you shouldn't really have to buy a review from a customer. Most likely they will voluntarily leave a positive review. But, what if your customers are not so forthcoming with reviews? Should you buy reviews and post them on your sales page? Or, maybe pay someone to post reviews on your behalf on various review sites? Could that damage your SEO?

I think this would overall damage your reputation not necessarily your SEO. Usually, some people do not know you want a testimonial. I think if you simply ask them that is enough, if they decline then just move on to the next client.

I doubt it'd damage your actual SEO (do reviews on most of these sites have any effect on this? They don't have links in to begin with).

But as the above poster said, it would seriously hurt your reputation. People have tried this sort of thing a million times, and every time it's been exposed, their reputation pretty much hits rock bottom. Also see, what happened with Robert Stanek (an infamous author known for using many fake reviews and sockpuppets). Or what happened with vBulletin after Internet Brands told its staff to post a bunch of fake reviews on some site. Both cases caused the perpetrators online rep to basically end up as complete crap.

That's why mailing is important, product sold, approx 1 week later, mail to ask wherever the customer is satisfied and if so, send him to testimonial, directly or indirectly.

Know, as good as your product can be you will always get bad reviews.

Just keep believing in your product.

You SEO might not get hit, though, if someone search critics on your product, likely to find it.

I good review that is looking natural helps in selling products too so this is really good thing... if you are writing true reviews.

From experience people are more likely to write bad reviews than good ones. This is not because they're unhappy with your product or service (not necessarily anyway), so don't misinterpret the message I am trying to relay. 😉 Instead, ask yourself, if you are delighted with a product do you go out of your way to tell the world about it? Or do you just sit comfily in your sofa feeling satisfied? More often than not it never occurs to people to write a review. Quite the opposite when they're angry! They want to vent, they want to tell the world, etc.! Now I'm not saying this is everyone by any means but it's quite a lot of people. 😉 offer your customers an incentive...maybe a money off coupon for writing an honest review. Believe me, it works! 😀 Be open to constructive criticism but appreciate any praise you receive! 😎

In answer to the OP's question, fake reviews will not damage your SEO. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) has nothing whatsoever to do with reviews of your product. Neither google nor other searches can care less whether your review is genuine or not, so long as it doesn't borderline with spam (we won't go into that! It's beside the point! 😀 ). However, if caught out (and you usually are. There are fisherman out there in the world who's special hobby is to...well...fish!). Do you really want to be that fish? 😉
