I am interested in starting a political forum. I just want to know if anyone would join if I did. I found a really cool forum software that won't be fully released for a year and I get to test it. Any thoughts?

Political forums can do really well and be extremely active. There is a lot of competition out there, so you will need to differentiate yourself in some way. How do you plan on being different to the existing political forums?

The idea that this is an unknown software doesn't sound compelling. You really need to show users that users can trust you with their information.

Additionally, I don't know why you would post this here. No one can guess what you are going to do without a preview. 😛 You could start the next forumotion for all we know. xD

I would possibly join the forum to stay up to date with politics. But here is my issue, you talk of a unknown software. I would have to do some research of this software before joining due to it being new and the issues that it could create. But I would most likely join.

If you use popular and effective software instead of using any new software about which others are not aware of then it would be good idea.

Very risky to use a test forum as a live forum, by all means have the test forum on localhost to play with it and find out how it feels to use it from the back end, and the user side.
Imagine if when testing it live, it hits a bug which takes a week to fix, then that causes another bug, it does and has happened.
I would stick to tried and tested software for a live board.

Politics might not be the best niche. Most political ramblings are offline.

Why do you say that, if you search for "political forum" on Google, you will see that lots of them have a post count in the millions?

I think all you really need is a neutral position. If you can provide a clean environment for political discussion, you may have the potential of creating one of the largest forums on the web.

Sounds like you just need an excuse to create a forum given the new software you've discovered. If my implication is right - this is the wrong approach; however, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you have a strong passion for political discussion and are actually interested in starting the forum based off interest.

Yes, people do join political forums. There are many out there that are supremely successful. Some more effective questions to ask would be:

-What would you like to see in a new community catered towards political discussions?
-If you're already part of existing political communities, what would you like to see differently? In what ways can the current forum(s) you're registered on improve?

Just my 0.02 cents. Good luck!
