Would you let somebody be a moderator...

If they had experience with moderating a forum before, or if you know that they are reliable, why not?
Of course, this is not a wise to do with a well-established forum, because things can get hectic.. -🙁-

It's a good idea to get a good taste of the member before you offer them a moderator position, no matter how bright and friendly and active they seem ~!~

I wouldn't, i'd have to know them extremely well and for a very long time, my forum is fairly new yet so to date i'm keeping things ticking over myself.

I agree with all of the above, especially with what hcfwesker said. People who become a moderator quickly feel they are invincible and abuse their powers way too much.

Even if my forum was huge, I would probably say yes to someone as moderator after a week if they made good quality posts, were helpful and had a brilliant resume and of course, I needed a moderator.

To be honest I'd be willing to take a small risk that they will go inactive to hire someone with outstanding experience.

That's not the smartest thing to do, imo. I could easily act like a brilliant member with good quality posts for a week on your forum, get the moderator job, then go berserk. You wouldn't want that happening, would you?

I disagree, I got moderator status here within a few weeks, became TL of the community team within a month and a bit due to how I have shown my qualities to the Admin team on my time here. You could wait for a year to hire someone and they could still go beserk, you need to have good eyes on good members that you know won't mess about. Previous experiences count a lot if you could ask previous Administrators how that person acted on their forum.

I highly doubt somebody is going to be a brilliant active member making good quality posts on a forum for a YEAR in order to become a moderator that will go berserk. But then again, in today's world there are a lot of nuts...

That's why the outstanding experience would be a requirement, and it would have to be proven as well.

@Traygon: Well yeah, you're one of the best staff FP has ever had and you were hired after a week or two into a moderator position.

I think sometimes certain members just shine out and you feel you can trust them much sooner than the majority, but what about admins? How long would you wait to appoint an second admin?

If they've only been registered on your forum for a week, but have been extremely active & kind to other members, would you let them be a global moderator?
Yes, if they have incredible moderating experience and post a good resume with evidence of their past staff positions/forums ran then I would certainly consider it. Would you rather have a guy who has been registered for a week but has been active everyday, posting good quality content and has moderating backgrounds or a guy who has been registered 3 months, is active but not as much, doesn't have anywhere near as much experience?

I personally wouldn't, and I think it's stupid if you let him/her be one. If your forum is huge, and somebody joins and after a week becomes a global moderator, I doubt you know how to run a forum.
That's a bit harsh, wouldn't take it far enough as saying one doesn't know how to run a forum.

What would you say about that? Does longivity matter to you?
Not necessarily, depends on the person, experience, skills, personal qualities etc.
I agree. Great post.
