Would you rather your forum software updates automatically but risk breaking things, or update manually and safely?

Definitely manually. I prefer to leave it to others to take all the risks before I'll jump on an update.

Manually.

Especially if you have a custom theme and plugins.

Of course, we all should be backing up the old forum before we update it, too.

How many of you are backing up first?

Manual because it's less risky. Updates can break plugins and themes, so you don't want it happening underneath you. With manual you can set up a test site and make sure everything works before upgrading.

Manually! I’d hate to go to sleep and wake up to my forum broken because of it updating during the night.
