Most forums are strict with the grammar and spelling. And those that are not very strict, they have rules to follow as a guide to posters about using the correct grammar. I understand that forum owners want their forums to be clean regarding the posts – sensible, with substance, relevant, informative... and grammatically correct. Is this just an idiosyncrasy of the owner or can the wrong grammar in posts affect the SEO of the forum?

I've never come across a forum that removed posts with bad grammar.
People of all nationalities are welcome on our forum. Sometimes people came to us with the intention of improving their English by interacting with native speakers and over the years, they improved so much that you would think they were native speakers. Some have followed us on to Sakuga City. There are one or two people on the forum still that don't have great English. It's a bit pompous of forum owners to suggest that those members are worth any less.
If someone writes something like "I r noob nd i lik animu nd gamz n stuff" then I am probably going to kick their ass for polluting the site with text speak.

Even I didn't came across forums that deleted my posts for grammar. Rather good forums are more concerned about copy/paste contents from new members.
People are often paid for good grammar and spelling. Nonetheless, there are a few people who want or don't mind informal paid or exchanged posts. Anyhow, in regards to free members, I assume few forums police their language - cause often they're lucky to have them there anyway.
for me I don't mind wrong grammars, seo is not the most important thing to me, its the members.. they are the one who will keep on coming back, while visitors from search engine are not guaranteed to stay and become a members. Members are the one who keeps the forum alive not the seo.
I dont think we should be very strict with grammar because a community is visited by a lot of people coming from diverse backgrounds. However, I also believe that we should intervene if the user is using very poor grammar and language that its close to impossible to decipher what that person is telling.

google algorithm could check your grammar when it comes to blog posts or articles and ranking your site based on this estimation

It will be better if one use good grammar and proper spelling even for the forum post. More credibility is added to the forum account if posts are educating and without any grammatical errors.

I totally agree with Calvin on this one. Well said Calvin.
I've seen some admins, try and edit members posts so that they can correct spelling and grammar. I kind of understand this because they want the posts to look presentable and look nice. Spelling mistakes, are quite obvious and can look quite bad on the admins.

I do own a forums and my grammar is really bad at times. Which leads to some embarrassment.
Do you go through the posts and edit them?

I do my very best to keep my content grammar clean and fresh also on point, so yeah I do sometimes edit my own posts, and sometimes staff posts.

In this case, sure, but if you have x number of posts a day, someone's broken English shouldn't affect your site all that much. If someone is being incoherent and making no effort to rectify that, then I'd probably have a word with them. The members are more important than what some visitor might think of a post here and there with bad grammar.
It is a different thing if your admins and moderators are using bad grammar since this will reflect badly on your site. We also strongly enforce good grammar on our AMS (article system) by using an editing team, but not on regular posts and comments.

Poor grammar is detrimental to discussion, however the biggest impact is in how search engines will punish the site for it. SEO is what makes or breaks in the long run.

I feel there's a big difference between wrong grammar and bad grammar. If I end a sentence with a preposition, I'm technically using wrong grammar. If, however, I write my posts like a middle schooler texting, then that's bad grammar.
I'm okay with the first one because I don't necessarily feel like proofreading before I post (unless it's my forum), and I shouldn't expect anyone else to do the same. The second one is annoying and, on my forum, it might end up with a PM asking them to write more clearly.
