Due to the length of time since the previous release, and some of the more complex issues that we have resolved since, we have decided to pilot a new approach to releases.

With that in mind, we have just released a preview version of XenForo 2.3.8! The intention behind release previews is to essentially do a "soft" release, similar to beta releases for major releases, and let it run in the wild for up to a week.

At this point, we will not be making any additional changes to XenForo 2.3.8 outside of resolving issues that may get reported to ensure stability ahead of a stable release next week.

We feel that this version should be ready for production; the majority of the changes have been running here without issue, and there will not usually be breaking changes as this is a third point release.

That being said, we do advise caution. If you run into any issues, you may have to revert to a previous backup, await details of a patch that may be provided if applicable, or, wait until the stable release next week.

If you are happy to help us test XenForo 2.3.8, this would be a huge help to us and your fellow customers and ensure a smoother release for everyone next week.

Next week's release will be re-released under a new version string/ID irrespective of there being changes between now and then. So if you upgrade now, you will also have to upgrade again next week.

XenForo 2.3.8 is finally here. It's just a preview version at the moment, but the stable version should be coming soon.

I've just tested this on a test forum with no issues.

Interesting dev / preview release schedule. It almost sounds like they want the community help with QA/testing

It does appear that way. It makes sense but I think it's also an indication that they are struggling in terms of development. This was after all primarily a bug fix release and there's still no sight of 2.4.

It's so strange seeing it come to this point. I was there before XF existed and remember vividly how successful they were.

I was there when forums were "dying" and "dead" and are still here.

It's interesting to me how things take shape and how even years later, the team is still working to make improvements even if they don't have the same number of customers, funding, and devs.

It almost makes me want to lend a hand because forums have been such a passion of mine for over 2 decades now and I have the tech skills to do it. Career wise I'm more in executive level but it could be fun to see if XF needs some help.

Another way to look at it is that they wanted more participation by the license holders, some of who complained vocally about being ignored.
It's not really any different than the old BETA/RC process they previously used though.

The 2.3.10 update (and the 1st party add-ons) were the usual "no big deal" process. No templates had to be merged and there were no errors. And I run quite a few 3rd party add-ons.

I've noticed communication has improved lots lately.
They have gotten better about their communication. And I agree, I hope it continues. There was a period in there that they were not doing themselves any favors with their posting content "style" and overall ignoring the license holders concerns.
I'm sure there are still issues that are of concern to some, but it does look like they are now making an attempt to move forward in their communication process.
I'm still waiting on 2.4 to get released and the new editor stabilized. Once a fairly stable 2.4 line is out I'll probably keep my site on it while investigating other formats to use since the forum on my site gets very little use with most of the traffic going to the add-ons I have in use.
