What would you say about directory submissions these days, is it effective or not?

It doesn't do any harm to submit your site to varies directories. If you have the time, why not? Some people look through various directories to find websites relating to their specific topic..so if you're looking to put a link to your site in a Sports category, and someone visits that category, they'll see your link depending on the amount of other listings there are.

Relatively useless unless you can get ranked in a high PR directory. And even then, your link is just going to be placed on a deep sub category with little to no value. If you happen to come across a directory that real people actually use (which is rare these days), then that's a different story.

Got to agree with what this guy says. Think about this, how many forums have you found using a directory?

I too agree with this, I haven't come across many forum that use directories.

It actually helps you to build your backlinks. They are of no harm and helps in increasing your link diversity.
