Hello Forum Promotion,

I have recently joined here to promote my new forum, Showdown Town. I made this thread to talk to other admins about your ways of dealing with members.

On my forum, I use colored warning bars. Each time a member breaks the rules, the color of their bar changes, and it decreases in size. By the time the bar has completely ran out, the member is banned. However, after a member breaks the rules 3 times, they are temporarily banned for a certain amount of time.

That's an interesting idea about the bars. I've never heard of that before. I like that idea. Most forums I've visited usually use the "three strikes; you're out" rule. In other words, three warnings and then you're out temporarily, keep it up and you could be banned permanently. That's a neat idea.

Yeah, the three strikes rule can be tedious after a while.

The warning bars weren't my idea though, I have seen other forums starting to use them more and more, and it's been proving useful.

Other members can also see if another member has been bad.😀

Yeah, if a member has been caught spamming, for example, the warning bar will show that, and if other members own forums, it'll give them a mental heads up as to who to watch out for on their boards (assuming that person has been really bad).

Well it really depends on the offence and what the motive behind the actioning was, a good example:

User A Made a public fool out of User B, User a didn't understand at the time but User B was upset, User B then sent a rude PM (or posted a rude message) about User A, starting a flame fight.

That one above id just delete the post or topic and forget the PM as it's understandable, every human gets made and does some things we regret (ive done it too.)

User A goes around spamming the boards with "User B is a fu**ing homo, i hope he dies."

Obviously id delete the post and because there is no motive behind it id warn/ban the user.

If their spamming, there's a different approach which could be, chucking their account into the moderating que or removing their account features (such as PMing, posting all together etc.)

You see, on a forum, the possibilites are endless when it comes to breaking the rules. That's way when it comes to handing out warnings, the severity always depends.

Yep, i personally think the best way to go is just to handle it with a simple PM, explaining the issue as to why they have raised to your attention, then just let your staff deal with the rest.

That's what I plan on doing as well. When a member breaks the rules, I will send them a written warning (through private messaging), explaining what they did wrong, and not to do it again. I may also deduct their warning bar if I have to.

You don't? Then if a member breaks the rules and you go and punish them, they can use the excuse that they didn't know what they did was wrong because there's no rules.
