You all know what i'm talking about. According to research displaying messages such as "You're not logged in, click here to register" increases your guest -> member convertion rate by 20%.

Have you ever been to a site with one of these messages displayed and been enticed to join, just because of the contents of that welcome message? Do you have one of these on your site? Do you find them annoying?

Discuss.

It doesn't entice me to join. I will join if I like the forum and won't if I don't. A senrence isn't going to change my mind.

I personally dislike them emensly. It comes across that the site is either desperate to get members, or trying to force people to join. The constant pop up drives me crazy, and most times i will simply leave the site altogether.

If you do not have enough confidence that people will want to join your forum just because they like what they see, then you need to do more work to alleviate that issue. Not just rely on some automated ,annoying little box to get your members for you.

It did make me join the Cloverfield fan forum even though i hadnt seen the film -lol-

You made my join the FFF, I dont think you did at CF, and well, i was on SFF from the start

I have a four liner on my forum that is displayed on every page. As I don't know if this helped me, I would certainly join my forum if I saw that (and I wasn't already a member...er admin of it).

Annoying...xD

I find them sometimes annoying depending on how noticeable they are. If is doesn't stay at the top of the browser properly when you scroll up and down then it annoys me.

Soemtimes I really want to join but can't be bothered...The message either drives me away or reels me in! :twistedman:

I think they're irritating, if some one wants to register they will.. all this doesn't help.

They only make me join if the board name seems interesting enough.

Yes.
I suppose if they're advertising a competition on the login/register thing that may persuade me. -happy-

They are great. If you run a promotion forum called "Forum Advertiser" people may be confused to what they can advertise there and might not sign up. They might think its only for forums when in its for everything. Or if you run a general discussion forum called "The Island" they might not be sure what the forum is about. They might think its a travel based forum or a whatever. Welcome boxes are a great place to add in a description to let your potential members know what your forum is all about and avoid any confusion. Also good spot for search engines to grab keywords off your homepage. Personally I would rather a forum have a welcome guest box at the top rather than a portal or a welcome website page.
