Too many users not enough cash

YouTube is about to go down the gurgler according to Benjamin Wayne the CEO of Fliqz.

Writing in his purple prose stacked blog, Wayne said that YouTube, was an "incandescent tower of video Babel; monument to the sloughed-off detritus of our exponentially-exploding digital culture". Wayne described it as a "Technicolor cataract of skateboarding dogs, lip-synching college students, political punditry, and porn".

However he claims that it has reached the zenith of its meteoric rise; and Icarus-like, wings melting; is spiraling back to earth. Murdering the metaphor he added that YouTube was soaring towards the future like a pigeon towards a plate glass window. We guess he didn't realise that pigeons can't soar upwards towards a plate glass window unless it was being towed behind a 747.

Wayne pointed out that YouTube is on track to lose roughly $470 million in 2009 something its overlord Google is not going to be happy about. He said that the economics are hard to overcome and there is no way that YouTube will make enough cash to be sustainable in the long term. The outfit would have to make $9.48 for every video impression shown something which they cannot do.

Wayne added that YouTube's traffic will grow and cost a fortune to run. He thinks that eventually the outfit will have to come up with a subscription.

Pay for Youtube? Bye bye millions of users and bye bye useless videos of teenagers thinking their funny and entertaining etc.

Poor Google... There is nothing i like seeing more then all these power hungry companies lose a bit of money -lol-

I don't why Google bought YouTube nor why ANYONE would buy it.

Does it bring in a lot of traffic? Of course

Does it cost much to run? Yes, millions a month.

Will it be able to make that money back? No.

Delivering so many videos to millions of people costs hundreds of millions of pounds in bandwidth costs - then you have the costs of staff, legal issues (with youtube that's a lot), servers, etc.

But how can you make that money back? Advertising simply won't cover it mainly because most of the videos are poop. All the good ones get taken down due to copyright.

Sites like youtube work well on a small level but large sites simply dont work that well

Dont believe everything you read on the internet. -razz-

It's hard not to believe, it was kind of obvious since YouTube first came along.

I'm hardly surprised.

I believe there's a rumour that YouTube are currently working on a Re-Design that will split their homepage into 4 tabs, being: TV Shows, Movies, Music, User Videos. Word has it this will be done to give producers priority over User uploaded videos, most likely to try and claw back some of the cash they're losing by displaying more, profitable ads on those pages.

However, whilst YouTube's branch is losing out, Google as a whole have seen a quarterly profit increase. More information here. ~smile~

Yeah, problem with that is it takes out the YOU in YOUtube....

Youtube is about the users, user generated content, home made videos, etc.

Making it about the large hollywood corporations won't do it much good IMO. A lot of the people I subsrcribe too have already moved to other places such as Dailymotion and vimeo.

Besides, you'll probably find most content will say "Sorry you can't watch this in your country" ~rolleyes~

Yep, yep.

I don't really use Youtube as much as I used to, use Dailymotion a bit more.

Youtube can make the money via advertising, they have plenty of places and alot of people would love to. Youtube's mistake was buying the music rights to host them on their servers which cost them to much which they couldn't afford.

MhW knows like everything...I dunno if to use the word geek...or intelligent. ~lol~ I keed dont keel me...*hugs*

Look, does it cost money to host and use all of the resources that YouTube does to broadcast these videos to millions - yes, hundreds of millions A MONTH? hell f#$#%ing no it doesnt! I doubt GOOGLE's whole company spends HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS a MONTH to do everything they do. If this is legit.. source please???

YouTube makes good amount of money via advertisements.. i make 1200+ a MONTH from YOUTUBE ALONE with advertisement revenues.. which continue to increase.. and also they send a couple more hundred to add to my Google AdSense account at the end of each month. I think the guy who commented on YouTube seems a lil basis towards it imo... kind of harsh words from someone about a company who forsaw a great idea that has made way for new media displayment (which has created cloned websites that deliever the same idea).

Face it... GOOGLE will NEVER die.. yet only expand.. (unless claimed to be a monopoly like Microsoft did at one point). With Google comes all of ITS websites and partnered websites. Why did Google buy YouTube.. cuz it DOES carry a profit.. do you think they just randomly purchased a website for the fun of it without taking personal advisers and careful examinations of the YouTube website to see if it would be profitable. I agree.. the copyright things and all the videos being pulled off YouTube.. especially in recent times.. has caused problems and probably "got all the good videos off of it" though you have to look at it this way.. it's all copyrighted by other people.. if YouTube did not do this than they would be sued daily for millions!

Also @ all those people who are complaining about YouTube's idea to increase it's public display of videos, movies, music, etc. WILL YOU PRODUCE MILLIONS OF VIEWS AND GUARANTEED? No, I don't think so. Yet when people are searching and want to see these trailers it's a great idea to generate views which will generate revenue from the advertisements! ALSO do you NOT see that THERE ARE MILLIONS OF USERS on YouTube??? Yeah they can setup a section for 5 random users.. yet doubt you will be featured on that as well... or once in two months... Why not create videos and spam your friends... YouTube will find this eventually and than you will get famous.

Also, YouTube doesn't even have THAT MANY advertisements on their sites. The main advertisements are only on partnered people on youtube - not like EVERY video. Also, agreed with the record label dispute that is going on - which pisses me off when trying to create an online internet radio show and they want me to pay OUTRAGEOUS royalty fees to play a damn song?!?! Screw that what happened to them paying the radio stations for publicity!!!???

Just people don't rant and scream and curse out YouTube for making business moves and the way EVERY website does.

new rumor: hulu to buy youtube... is it true, idk... i heard it a while ago but thought nothing of it until i heard this

I doubt Hulu will buy YouTube - 1) doubt Google will sell it.. 2) why would a video sharing company buy anohter video sharing company unless they want to beat out the competition, though I could see their approach.

It's been a long time coming. Youtube is to expensive. What person would be dumb enough to buy a subscription to watch videos that suck. Downhill for youtube i reckon. Good riddance to. Everything thats worth watching is on iTunes anyway. -8)-
