We use phpbb3 here. I have tried a test board of zetaboards the other day and it is an inprovement from invisionfree but I still even think phpbb2 is better than that. And you say phpbb2 boards is free, so is zetaboards.
Before we enter this debate... We have full control over this forum so we can add all our own mods and stuff like that. By default i think phpBB3 is better and i think it looks much better. The forum index make me want to kill myself because it looks so horrible how they have all the topic, post, viewers and stuff.
I think featurewise zetaboards is much better then if (it can't be worse can it?) but lookwise it really isn't worth the extra features.
Anyway i can see the zetaboard going the same way as if. No more updates for years... This is probably what it is going to still be like in 6 or 7 years time. Atleast phpBB3 would have been developed further in that time and we can add loads of mods and free phpBB3 will add loads of mods too which will make phpBB3 even better. -roll-
phpBB2 is behind featurewise compared to ZB but atleast that doesn't make loads of people want to jump of a bridge when they open it because it looks rubbish.
In the end it was speedjammer that wanted to jump,
ANd yes you guys have full control over this software and what you add etc, etc etc, but on our other board we got only what we got.
I do believe that can update this software, because benjamin or whoever made it, coded unlike the original invisionfree which he didnt code so he couldnt update it well.
Anyway, i just went with the tide and moved. I do agree the way the forums are set out makes me want to jump off a bridge though 😛
