A whopper.

At this point I don't want anyone doing too much work for me, just need to know what's possible and what isn't. I need to know if this whole thing is even feasible first and I don't want it to turn out not to be and have all that time wasted. Still unable to locate a good host and hosting plan because I don't know what my bandwidth usage/disk space usage is.

That mod is for group colour which this is not.

Group colours are also cool, so I may use that mod, thanks. But what I have is a system by which individuals can purchase a custom colour or combo of colours for their name. however many they like. Their member group does not change.
 
My friend that also converted from ProBoards had that multi-colour username thing as well. I'll see if he found one for SMF.
 
haha i read that like a few minutes after you posted your last post, and actually found the forum you asked about the multi color. so yea basically only mybb and phpbb can do what he wanted and mybb may only be one solid color

What's the differnce between phpbb and SMF? I thought only SMF could do the conversion from proboards?

Would it help anyone if I showed you the code I'm using on probords to produce the colours?

I don't know about a price to get the Mod developed, but the SMF site would be more likely to know.

And no, you can convert ProBoards to PhpBB2 (not sure about PhpBB3) as well. However, if you want PhpBB3, you can always just convert the PhpBB2 file to PhpBB3.

Or you could even go with MyBB (which I personally find the most powerful of the free, self-hosted softwares) by converting to either SMF or PhpBB, then migrating it to MyBB.
 
it says it can convert to SMF 1.1.x, phpBB 2, phpBB 3 you can always go to one of those then convert to mybb or etc
 
I'll PM you the code tonight soon, look for it in your inbox 🙂 It is not a code I made, I cannot make any codes. It's a free use code used on many proboards boards.

I still want to convert to SMF it just seems the logical way to go for something as close to Proboards in functionality as possible.

The problem is still finding a good solid reliable affordable host. Leaning towards Hawkhost right now, only because Forum Promotion themselves use it and they don't seem to have an issue. Really want one like Brawldomain's though--I really like their forum's lightning speed. I don't know what they are using.

What is python script, and what is file settings?

I'm just afraid that when I sign up and get the paid hosting I won't know what to do. I paid for Yahoo hosting last year, and still didn't know what to do, even after I contacted their help and they sent me an email explaining what to do. so, $117 down the toilet, the account still sits there unused because I'm too stupid to figure it out.
 
WOW, thats alot of money for a hosting account, wasted money.

I am starting to think I just can't do this though. i'm not very smart about this stuff, and I'm just feeling lost.

The colour names isn't the only code I would need either. I need a code that provides a form with text boxes with text next to it for our application board as well.

Can I use my own graphics without problems or needing more mods? I completely created the look of my forum as you see it now. Does SMF work with headers ad footers same as PB?

I think I need to create a test board and get things set up before I do the cloning and bring the board over. I can't just have it cloned and then throw myself in without ever having gotten used to software that is entirely new to me.

This is an RPG and lately close to 2,000 posts a day accumulate. I would need to have the new board up and running ASAP the second the cloning happened to avoid losing posts in the interim.
 
Well i can provide you with a test board till you learn your way around SMF.

yes you can use your own graphics with out needing more mods you can just upload the graphics to your hosting account.

SMF may be a bit different with the footer and header but once you know your way around it will be fairly easy to edit it.

when you are ready to convert you can send a mass email asking no one to post till you are done converting the post and putting it on the SMF forum. then telling them where to go to access the new forum etc

Yes! If I can see what it will be like to log in to my account on my site by looking at a test forum then that'd be great. I already have a paid Photobucket account. And a skin like brawldomain would work fine, something like that, I just want to have something immediately ready to go when the conversion is done.

I don't know what I'd do without your help. I'm going to make an account on the SMF forum and start learning what I can there. Are they newbie friendly and friendly to people who have not got a board with them yet?

I'm still in the process of speaking on on one with each of my staff to warm them up to the move idea, I want them all on board for this!
