Yes, I hate it, however, the 2 CT members on my forum are a bit bad with grammar. One of them, who is Puerto Rican talks like "I'm cool with dat mang"..just stuff resembling that. I accept it, because that's him..that's how he talks. I'd NEVER demote him, or tell him he needs to get better grammar skills.

I can't stand staff that only use small letters in posts. You need to use CAPITALS!.

I require all my staff members to take a grammar test. I don't want to see any "who/whom" mistakes in their posts.

That was a joke. If I ran a "professional" type forum, I might care about grammar; however, I just run a little general discussion forum, so I don't really care too much about the grammar of my staff members (I always write with the best grammar I can on forums).

That was directed at me, wasn't it? 😛

Ya, I don't like it. It makes them seem unprofessional and immature. Typos are alright, but not failure to use a simple spell-check. I spell-check all my posts before making them, at least briefly.

I honestly might do that. Except the who/whom mistakes, there really not that important because most some members don't know that rule.

@ Zak: ya, its anyng.

honestly, folks, there are times for formal english, and there are times for standard english, and there are times for informal english. as an english teacher, i do not dwell on wording and sentence structure in forum posts as i do when writing a formal paper. i do not burst out into tears when i spot a fragment. relatedly, i have been known to give my students handouts, even mentor texts, in all lowercase letters.

many children - especially the best and the brightest - tend to latch onto grammar and such conventions because they feel their knowledge of these practices goes hand in hand with their intelligence. the way i see it, grammar is a means by which to express yourself. we teach elementary and middle schoolers grammar rules so that they are able to make sense. with a great familiarity with conventions, however, comes a creative license. nobody complains when a nobel prize winning author talks about three entirely separate topics in his 'i believe' paper instead of the traditional single topic. nobody gives when a college composition professor purposefully uses a fragment in a memoir of his.

grammar is overrated. really, it's all about expression.

Zane, true. But you said English teacher, so why not any capitals? Not one single uppercase letter.

well guys i me here for more than a month now, what are your ratings about my grammer? i know its gonna be pretty low but i would love to see what you all have to say about this,
10 is the pefect and 1 is the least,

Not really, unless their attitude is similar to a troll.

I don't like the "2 c sum1 around l8er" kind of typing so I don't use it, even if I've typed for fun 1337 before, I am very well aware that the way you type is like the way you dress yourself, it makes the difference in how people treat you and what they think of you.

So unless, I am in a SPAM area, I usually try to type the best I can, to my English knowledge. I make typos, but hopefully they are not as annoying as they used to be. XD

Honestly, I'd give it about a 5. Maybe less. It's terrible. :S

I mean, it's wrong from the start because you've completely forgotten about putting a capital letter at the start of your sentence. To me, that's just lazy, particularly because you learn that in first grade and it takes less than half a second to reach for the shift key to make it capital.

There should be a comma after 'guys'.

Then you've got the 'i me here' thing, which should be 'I have been here' or 'I've been here' for short.

Not sure about your next comma. You could have put a full stop there, or you could have added the word 'so'.

The comma after 'this' should certainly be a full stop.

You've also spelt 'perfect' wrong.

That's all I can see for the moment.

You're manifestly correct. It was a comma splice. Independent clauses must be separated by a semicolon or a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS).

I don't really mind, after all it is a forum. I usually use correct grammar and punctuation but if my staff wishes to use some internet talk in some of their posts I won't go mad. The only problem I have is when someone writes in such a way that I cannot understand the actual word. That drives me MAD!

I don't think you got his point....

It's annoying, but you have to remember not everyone's first language is English. Majority of the time the people who use "i want 2 talk to u, ur like a n00b" are actually native LOTE speakers (Language Other Than English.)

To me people like that are impressive 🙂

Member - "Saidn' I nothing bad you to"

Staff - "Who learned you to spoke"

Me - Ban! Ban!

j/k, I wouldn't ban them, just humilate them is all, hehe...

What really bothers me is when bright kids attempt using grammar and sentence structure that is way over their heads. I have only ever known one teenager capable of truly writing at a college level, and I did not meet that individual online.

I don't think that anyone wants people to speak ''dictionary.'' It is highly precocious (in the most negative sense). The vast majority of us desire proper spelling and grammar because it makes it easier for us to understand the content posted on our boards.

Posts like this, are overdoing it in the extreme:

Hello members of this homely community. I am but a humble donkey coming to graze upon your threads. I recently discovered your forum through Google and I'm most anxious to become an active members here. Alas, I am not much good at creative writing, although with a site named ''Be Creative'' who's motto is ''Unleash your Imagination'' I should hope that that would change.

Due to constraints placed upon me by a dreadful institution called ''school'' I shall not have as much time to be on this site as I may wish. However I shall drop by intermittently and perhaps post one or two pieces of my own. For although I am but a mediocre writer now, I shall endeavour to better my craft.

Without further delay I shall begin discovering what wonders there are to be found here!
