So far my community has been ad free and since we are working on a non profit fan game, we won't likely have ads too.

I use it since it's easy to setup, I know that I'm going to get paid, and it's really straight forward on what is allowed and what is not. Unlike other ad companies which may pay you, you know what Google stands for and how they treat others.

I have Adsense on my forum in conjunction with other networks, I think that works the best for me personally. I think Adsense is great besides lack of communication (not a surprise though with them being part of Google), and sometimes you can get warnings/infractions without there really being a good explanation.

I do like using Google Adsense. I currently use it on the forum that I co-own and I am also looking to use it on a forum I am working on now as well when I am able to. I have made some money from it but not enough for a payout yet I keep pushing my sites out there and seeing how it goes. I would like to offer the selling of ad space at some point but being that we use Xenforo at the moment, that is a paid addon and not something I have the funds for at the moment.
I use open source forum scripts because it will keep my cost down. My forum running cost is just the renewal cost of the domain (I have a hosting package that allows hosting multiple sites, so I do not have to pay additional money to host my forum). When the operational cost is low, your profit margin will be high.

AdSense is reliable and predictable revenue once you have a stable CPM and CTR, but I find their payouts fairly low, and it's hard to make tangible revenue through them. Directly selling ad-space is always the best money maker
Yes, you make more money by selling ad space. However, finding advertisers is really hard. You might try ad marketplaces like Buy Sell Ads, but your site needs tons of traffic before you can get approved on ad marketplaces.
I was using Adsense years ago. Was actually making pretty good money and was close to another payout, when it just vanished. Not sure what happened. I just now logged in, and it's like I never had an account, so I registered again. Never before thought to check out what happened.

Adsense is best viewed as a revenue source to fill in the gaps between other revenues. Not every page can have affiliate links, not every month will be great for your ad sales, etc., etc. Adsense is always there. Adsense is also indifferent and can play a role in specific communities that may receive poor feedback from their users if they pick up sponsors or take sides.
