I think open source works better for utility based software like OpenOffice, FileZilla FTP client, VLC media player, etc and not as great for gaming software since most of the funnest and popular games are made by For-profit proprietary companies like EA, Rockstar, Rovio, Activision, THQ, and SquareEnix.
Free and open source games like Torcs I played are okay, but don't seem as good as paid alternatives like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts Need For Speed, Call of Duty, or Grand Theft Auto.
