Anyone have a garden?

I'm so afraid to do canning. It's so much work and what if I fail and ruin all that food? What are some tips?

I made sweet pickles yesterday and the thinly sliced cucumbers were already ready in an hour so we started gobbling them up! They were amazing!
We just do small batches to last a week or so, so I honestly don't have tips. I too am afraid of ruining the food. We tried making fermented products but it didn't turn out. I actually posted this in my forum today:

That's a great article! Did you find that the cost that first year of canning was more than the return of the canned goods? For my garden I found that the first year I didn't even break even on what I got back in vegetables but this year I have more than profited compared to what they cost in the grocery store to purchase.

Well, we actually give a lot away, so we lost money lol Since we do organic, our savings for our own selves is way better than buying from the store.

I gave away cucumbers to neighbors and even the plumber LOL My daughter gets some of the cucumbers for her guinea pig and I also give her some zucchini and yellow crookneck squash. I have about 10 of the squash on the counter now and am trying to find new recipes that are fast. Got any?

You probably make zucchini bread, but have you tried chocolate zucc. bread? We don't have a recipe per se that we've used; we tend to tweak lol but there are ones online. Another option is to spiralize it & use it as a pasta substitute. Can put fixings on it just like you would for spaghetti. You can also bake it & put parmesan & seasonings. We've done that with sweet potatoes, parsnips, & other root veggies before. If you like to deep fry, put a batter on like you would green tomatoes or onions. Not sure how 'fast' these would cook up really but if you're like us, you'll probably tweak lol

Oh how I wish I could make the chocolate zucchini bread. I'm allergic to chocolate though 🙁

I tried the parmesan on top of some yellow crookneck squash and put it under the broiler for 4 minutes and it was really delicious!!

I don't know what I'd do without my chocolate lol Glad the parmesan worked out for you!

I have one but I'm tiered of it, over the years it become more of a headache than a pleasure so I decided to get rid of it this year.

Currently I don't have a garden. We had a spot for it, but we ended up letting the grass grow in, after the last time we tilled and raked it out.

I'm bumping up my old garden thread because today is the day I start my garden! Yeah, I'm late but that's because I didn't think I was even going to do one this year.

I'll be planting only zucchini, yellow crookneck squash and basil this year. It won't be as big of a garden as last year and I'm not even going to put my fencing around it. Last year I had extra plants on the outside of the fencing and none of the wildlife messed with them so I'll see how it goes this year.

We (wife lol) usually do one every year but this year we didn't get the chance. Most of the time use Earth Boxes and do zucchini, green bell peppers, egg plant and tomatoes. Good thing is here in Florida we can plant twice a year, so will be doing it in the fall.

I thought about doing containers this year but buying the wood and dirt would have made my produce too expensive! LOL So I bought landscape fabric and reused my old pins.

Yeah I have a garden but it’s hard to maintain though, especially in summer when it dries up.

You're right. If you don't have water to keep it soaking in the mornings for a while and don't get enough rain then it becomes a huge problem. I bought soaker hoses last year and although I haven't hooked them up yet, it was nice to just turn on a faucet for an hour or so.

I have a big enough backyard, I should start a garden! Maybe I'll do it one of these days.

My next new home that I'm moving to will have a garden 😛

My girlfriend is making one. She's using rabbit compost. Right now we have nothing growing.
