Hey, well I've read a few topics in this forum and I've seen that some Admins are scared of
banning someone from their forum.

Everyone must remember that if you want to ban someone for a valid reason then
ban them. Most of the time members are really sorry about what they have done so there is
no need to ban them.

I have a member on my forum that I have banned a few times, they are unbanned at this present time
and I hope they stay unbanned. After a few days they get really sorry and want to come back on again.

So to my point, most Admins don't realize that it's there forum and they can do as they please.
Of course no staff member should abuse their powers but everyone has to remember if they find it
uncomfortable having a member doing something, they have every right to ban/warn them and
sometimes I've found that Admins don't realize that they can do such things.

What is your take on Admins and their powers?

You got some admins who love the power, and look for any reason to ban.

Then you have some who use banning as a last resort. Some members can be calmed down by talking to them 1 on 1.

It just differs from to one admin to another.

Nope. I'm not scared. I've already almost had to ban one member but that was due to post reports and just the staff were getting sick of her. She's fine now. 😀

I only ban someone if they truly deserve it, and on top of that, it's not perm. I will usually talk to them first.

It's best to talk with them first. I can't stand admins that just ban because they have the power. Maybe the person didn't understand what they did or something?

Nah, I don't really have a problem banning users if they spam, I mean I've really only banned people on DNT, but thats a big board so the amount has added up... all spammers and scammers though that got the ban hammer 😀

I use banning as a last resort where warnings, post moderations, posting suspensions and board suspensions haven't worked before. Either that or in a case where a member is a direct threat to the community (doesn't happen very often). But when I ban it's permanent - unless the person is proven not to have done the deeds that got him banned.

I also use it as a last resort. I usually ban for 7/14 days and after that permabanned. I don't like to do it though.

Why would you be scared of using the ban hammer? If you have a valid reasonable reason to ban them, go for it.

You can't be an admin if you're scared of banning people.

I ban members for 3 resons....
- Only posting spam/unwanted content - Permanent
- 3 forum rules broken over time - 1 day, then perament after 3 more strikes.
- Disrespect for others and staff/flameing

Every little strike gets a reson and a note, so they know why it hapened.

I'm was not saying that I am scared, I was saying that other Admins around here are as I have
seen some asking what to do and should they ban someone or not.

One person I banned only joned because it was the only way he could contact my partner.

He only came online if my partner was online.

Never made any contributions to the forum ( post wise).

In the shoutbox he kept asking if XXX would be online.

People got so fed up with him in the end.

I will only ban if it seems to be necessary and everyone voted for him/her to be..banned

I am not scared, if they done the crime, they do the time. (Ban Wise Obviously)

I'm usually too scared to ban sometimes, especially if it's a good-member-turned-bad boy/girl case, or if it's a moderator, otherwise, if it's downright spamming, hateful towards other members, that kind of thing, I'll gladly show them the exit.

Nice way to put it lol. I've only had to ban one member from Webverts.

I'm always reluctant to ban members. However, if they come on a forum and all their posts are spam adverts, I take the view that they do not wish to contribute and I will ban them. I apply the same policy to new members who join and post lots of promotional links to Adult sites. I

f someone is constantly criticizing the community in a negative and harmful way, I'll also ban them. Note I'm not talking about constructive criticism, which I welcome and appreciate. I'm referring to members who regularly and consistently try to damage the forum.

I'm not exactly 'scared' of banning, though I do feel a little guilty when I do. Banning is really a last resort with me, as I would much rather get a problem resolved peacefully rather than completely bannishing somebody.

But sometimes you have to do the dirty work. 🙁

Well, I've never banned an actual human member before (just spambots as of yet), though I'm sure I'd be a bit hesitant to do so.

Which brings me to the next thing that I most worry about. On larger forums (even bigger than FP) many admins go ban-crazy and people are banned for little reason at all. It's obvious these admins have been banning for a long time and that it has become practically a custom for them, which, while it may be necessary, seems a little sick to me.
