Are forums dying or almost dead?

Yeah true
I guess if your willing to have a forum you need to have the money, any userbase is 'possible if you have the funds like ign they would of had the funds as a company otherwise you might struggle like I have noticed its hard to promote my site anywhere and no one is interested.

I agree Reddit could be counsidered one of the biggest forums on the internet, but their sections are listed on the top of the page instead of vertically like traditional forums.
Maybe the future of forums would be like Reddit where the top most read/votted topics are on the front page.

I know some forums that have 700 members on now, So that proofs there still active/not dead.

I believe http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ still has a lot of activity.
Tom's hardware has 1556359 Registered members on its forum.
I think if you want a more active forum like Tom's Hardware these days you need to add a lot of useful posts to keep people interested and replying on useful topics. Forums also need to spend a lot of time or money to post a lot of useful content which people will reply to, and make new topics.

They are alive and kicking, and more active than ever. I don't think social networking sites will take over. As long as the interest of discussing subjects and engaging with others is still there, then forums will live on for a long time. Forums are much different in many ways. They have more benefits as well, and you feel more involved within a large group of people.
I dont think forums are on their final line yet but definitely, they are coming closer. If you take a more analytical look at the different forums that are cropping up and going down, niche wise, you will see that there is a substantial decrease in successful general discussion forums. This is primarily because of the fact that people are getting more used to Twitter, Facebook and the like for general discussions. Another thing that is an obvious cause of worry is that forums are being pushed to a 'secondary discussion platform' when the portals are being occupied by blogs and other mainstream articles.
However, as long as certain niches that cannot be played on a social network exists (like roleplaying, promotion) I dont see things deteriorating too much. On top of that, it is definitely noteworthy that a part of population of the present day world is still not exposed to the benefits of participating in a forum due to a range of issues. Hopefully, the balance is not too much to the worst side.
