Are plugins/mods still annoying to install?

I recall how rough it was installing mods/plugins for phpBB3 way back. Has it ever gotten any easier over the years?

I remember installing mods/plugins on phpbb. You had to go into each template and manually insert code. It was the worst.

I have a guy do all mine 😀 No, seriously, I have a friend who enjoys doing that type of stuff and it scares me because it's so intimidating, so I just ask sweetly and he kindly responds with No problem. If I die, he gets to keep that forum because of all the work he's put into it.

I have considered going to phpBB3 for a bit, then converting to XF once I get a license. If they are still annoying to install and such, will skip. Way too annoying to install plugins/mods lol

Oh, phpBB 2.x was a pain in the caboose to have updates or plugin installs. I remember I'd work for 2-3 days on end to upgrade the platform (had a lot of plugins from which the forum cash was the hardest to update.

I am using phpBB for a new forum I am getting ready to launch as well. I personally love phpBB but I also enjoy installing ext for it lol maybe one day I’ll buy another XenForo license and convert it. For now I’ll just run my XenForo forum and my other on phpBB. 😁

I am possibly considering phpBB3 or SMF for my new forum idea/concept.

I say go with SMF, it's much easier to set up permissions and install plugins. phpBB can be a nightmare to work with at times IMO.

This was one thing that put me off ever using phpBB ever again. I remember when I first started out creating forums, phpBB was the first forum software I went with and I remember adding mods and it was such a pain. One thing wrong and you either had to pull in a backup or start again, it was terrible. With you having to go into the coding and manually add things it was so easy to accidentally make a mistake and one tiny mistake could be a huge mess. I am actually curious if mods got any easier to install on phpBB but it seems they may not have done which is a shame.

phpBB now uses an 'extensions' system, similar to a plugin system like Xenforo, but I think some still require the hardcoding of the actual files, which I find to be seriously outdated in 2023.

Installing and uninstalling doesn't bother me on IPB. Not unlike SMF where you have to login into your server root, upload files then back to the board and then start to install. As to IPB you buy or get the addon, you go into your IPB admin and then with one click of a button and done, fully installed.

All I hate and we all get it when that addon is no longer gets supported removed or pooped.

Yes, its pain in a**. I have been trying to install mods for adds but they simply won't work.

I've not seen the big deal about installing mods or themes. You just need some unzipping program which is usually free. You might be able to do it all from cPanel or some similar interface.

The only challenging part of installing plugins on phpBB today is finding plugins that do what you want AND are completely compatible with the current version of phpBB. There are many, many useful plugins that have not been updated to be compatible with 3.3.x.
