Are plugins/mods still annoying to install?

phpBB now uses an 'extensions' system, similar to a plugin system like Xenforo, but I think some still require the hardcoding of the actual files, which I find to be seriously outdated in 2023.
Oh no, that sucks then! I agree that it is super outdated in 2023.
The only challenging part of installing plugins on phpBB today is finding plugins that do what you want AND are completely compatible with the current version of phpBB. There are many, many useful plugins that have not been updated to be compatible with 3.3.x.
Ah yeah, for shame. 🙁

That's incorrect.

Extensions are just like plugins for WordPress or any other modern system nowadays.

You add the files into the extension subdirectory and that's it. No core files are modified.

Its because these products and/or programs are FREE, folks. They don't have the resources to do what IPB/xenForo does. The plugin system in xenForo 2 is easy to use, over the XF1 version, because they re-thought the process of how its done. WordPress has similar design philosophy. Not entirely sure about IPB, but I have not seen complaints about plugins there...

Always the free forum software that get the complaints of plugins not actually working like its supposed to. Most of the plugins hasn't even been tested internally or at scale.
