Just wondering, can a forum be shut down and closed if it has a few copied posts from another forum?

Not 100% sure but would think it would all depend on if what you were copying was copyrighted. Posting copyrighted material would probably break the terms and conditions of a forum.

I know if the forum is on a free host like myfreeforum.org that it will be shut down as I saw a bit of that when my Futurama forum was hosted with myfreeforum. I'm not sure if you host yourself though.

If the posts were copyrighted, then I would have them either remove the posts/images personally or risk the account being shut off on my hosting. So I'm sure other hosts do it too. Just prove that it's your content.

It can actually be done oftenly. There are scripts that copy posts/ threads from different forums and ads members and posts in minutes.

If you looked closely in forum software or hosts details and agreements there be something copyrighting doing this.

Not closed, however you can be forced to move your hosting to another location. Since posts are text and text can be copyrighted, if someone has enough proof to scare your host with a DMCA notice and you happen to be on USA soil, you're probably going to be contacted about it.

Oh, and why yes, this can be abused to help shut down competition. You may thank the corrupt copyright lawyers.

Yes. A DCMA notice can be filed, and a forum be taken offline. Forumotion is one host that doesn't do this though.

Personally, I doubt that this would ever happen.

Same here. Usually all forums have similar posts and topics to some extent. I think the only way your forum can get forcefully shut down is if it had copyright violations or whatever have you.

Ashley, text can be copyrighted, so if somebody were to copy and paste everything that is on a website, that would be a copyright violation. Anything unique in some way is/can be copyrighted. For example, my calculus notes are technically copyrighted by me.

It may happen in some places, but I doubt that it would happen on smaller forums.

I thought it could happen on somethings that are watermarked, like rules, graphics, etc. Gosh, you'd swear after 2 years I'd know some of these things by now... Still in the learning phase... not exactly fair, really 🙁

You do realize that as I said, posts are text and text can be copyrighted, meaning that a copied and pasted post without consent from the rights holder is copyright infringement, and is "just as bad" as downloading / sharing a song, or as the RIAA puts it "shooting a fellow human point blank in the face" (may have exaggerated that a bit... but meh).

Uploading copyrighted music to YouTube is illegal, but many smaller channels who don't get a lot of views get away with it.

While it COULD happen, I doubt that it would happen to smaller forums.

Getting away with murder doesn't make it legal

I'm one to speak for disagreeing with the current laws and such, but I do want it known that it is illegal. Do it if you want, but it's your own personal risk.

I never said that it was legal. I said that I doubt that it would happen to smaller forums.

Of course, it would also depend on who hosts the forum.

Smaller forums would probably be more of a target to be completely honest, as they don't have much to defend themselves with. After all, a site like IGN would have more ability to fight such a notice.

As for the host, as I stated in my first post, you would probably just switch to offshore hosting (not NL though, somewhere like HK).

It doesn't matter how small or large the YouTube channel is, if the system detects a match with a song/movie that is in youtube's database, the copyright owner is allowed to block it, put ads on it, or do nothing with it. Case in point, I have an account with almost 75k total views. Before I uploaded a music video, the account had a couple thousand views. Originally when I uploaded the video, it was blocked, then ads were put up a few hours later.

Copying a few posts as in what? Tutorials? Images? Or just a few forums games like 'count to 1,000 before 2012'?
