Do you get this question a lot on your forum? Ever have someone join, make a couple posts and immediately ask to be a staff member? How do you answer/handle member requests to be placed on your staff team?

I've had a guy that tried to do this one time but it's been a while. He made some posts on the forum but his grammar was pretty horrendous. Now, I don't expect anyone to have perfect grammar but his was bad enough that I had trouble reading most of his posts. Bad thing was he blamed his bad grammar on his keyboard missing a few keys on it......like having terrible grammar wasn't his fault. Then he started asking me if he could be a staff member on my forum after making a few posts. When I declined his offer, he got really mad at me and even cussed out one of my other staff members. So I ended up banning him from the forum completely because I didn't want to go on with his bad behavior and treat other people on the forum the way he had treated me and the rest of the staff.

We've had multiple people ask that question on Christianity Haven and it's been that way since probably the very beginning. I usually will give some of the people some tasks to do to see if they're up to the job and these tasks will take the course of 3-6 months. Mostly, I demand that my mods be active. If they don't log in and post, then they're useless to me. If I give them a special assignment on a part of the board and they refuse to do it, then that means they won't follow my direction either on other things. I let them know up front why I won't hire them.

Then there are times when we've had plenty of mods and no reports to work on, so why would I hire more?

At least in the old days of forums, asking to be a mod was pretty much an instant way to blacklist yourself from being a mod. Nowadays it feels like you only need to ask in the right way and you'll probably get mod status somewhere.

I own two forums but I don't get requests for moderations. However, I have been offered moderator positions on forums where I post frequently.

It's rather looking around for people to join your team or you have members ask you to join your team from out of the blue. Couple from the passed has came to me and asked if they can a moderator or a requested position. I say it can be hard decision, knowing that you may not have a chance to find anyone elses or maybe it's definitely a hard decision to say no. Aren't to bad if your community is bazzin and activities are wonderfulness, in my case hiring more staffing was like hiring them to increase conversion and members activities with growth.

Yes, had a couple of people asking me if they want to mod for me, and yes I have allowed it. The results are that it didn't work out, maybe it's just me and bad ownership or they realised the outcome and left. Then again those that join posted rather than doing anything else. Hard to find anyone that doesn't just do posting other then paying.

End of the day it's just you as the owner to do all the work yourself.

I have had members ask me if they could be a moderator, yet I always set a rule on my forums stating that asking to be a moderator will certainly make your chances of becoming a moderator very slim. I always mention that when I need more staff I would make a topic on the forum, as well as here and other promotional forums spreading the news about hiring a mod.

I've always found that the best moderators don't ask to be moderators, they just naturally do the job as members without the tools or title. What I mean by that is you get members who are obviously passionate about the forum, longstanding, active and articulate plus they will always attempt to defuse rather than escalate a difficult situation.

Those are the members I want on my staff.

I also think it worth saying that power is easy to give but hard to take away so think twice before giving a promotion.

It is one of those things I do get, when I am amped about opening a forum and want to attempt to get members on. There would almost always be 1-2 people that will ask straight away, without even making the attempt to start posting and stay active. The few times I didn't say no straight away, and stated that the person needed to first show the willingness to be active, were the ones that had split responses of being unwilling to be moderator if they had to start posting then and there, or just the general attempt to start posting, but never logging back in.

I haven't encountered anyone doing that since like 2006/2007 when I first started my board and everyone on forums was a teenager. XD

I remember years ago i used to get this a lot on one of my older communities, but i decided to make a special page for staff positions if one became available they would see it on there, it does save on a lot of PM messages and forums posts asking the questions.

I usually do, especially when the forum is young.

I usually respond as friendly as I can and just insist they remain active, helpful, and continue to bring something to the community.

I've noticed with many people who ask, tend to go inactive after you make them a moderator.

So I like to watch them first and then make the offer myself 🙂

I don't get this as much now but I used to way back when I first opened Chat Addcits in 2009. I would get people come on, make a few posts, and then ask to be a moderator and they would expect to get it. My response was always we were not looking for staff at the moment but when we do, we are looking for people who are passionate about the forum, who are active on the forum, and creating activity on the forum. Usually, after that they never cam back on the forum so I usually knew their intentions were bad.

I did that once on one of Nebs forums' years back, I think. I don't think I outright asked but I hinted I wanted it. I had a few thousand posts by then though, at least.

I was like thirteen or around that, and I had it in my head that being a Moderator equated to a symbol of respect.

At 27, I cringe when I think about that, haha.

I think that was the problem with this guy.......he was just young and immature.

I wouldn't beat yourself up over it. Most people reach a point in their life where they grow up and mature.

I just ask them to prove their worthy of being staff by posting another 1000 quality posts/topics. Most just leave. lol

That's easy regards to being myself, yet I can't promise that it be 100% good content ;p

It's not always about how much content you made anyway

No but I also won't have someone who only has 5 posts be a staff member unless it's an arrangement made by me.

Imagine being a staff for making one post 😛

I don't recall having this question asked on my current message board, though it says specifically in the board rules, "Do not ask to be promoted to a staff member. Staff members are chosen based on experience and etiquette."

I remember some boards making the rule that if you ever ask to be staff then you'll never become one.

I can understand being interested in being a staff member of a particular site, but asking, especially when you're still fairly new seems kind of desperate.
