Hey Everyone,

Something that's cropped up time and time again behind the scenes is the future of the Forum battles section. Whilst it's considered as something exciting for the members directly involved, the battles forum is pretty useless for everyone else. Another problem we regularly faced was keeping the forum tidy, adding the polls, changing the topic attributes and moving old battles to the relevant subforum was a pretty dull task for Team members and took precious time that could have been used for other (and more constructive) purposes.

So this morning, with the backing of all 3 Administrators and a couple of the Team Leaders we have decided to close the forum battles section indefinitely. The ability to create new topics has already been withdrawn. The battles forum (viewforum.php?f=8) will remain in this state until 10PM GMT (approximately 6 hours from now)...at which point it will be completely removed from public view.

Apologies to those who actually found it useful, but we feel it's for the best.

Feel free to discuss.

Hmm, sad to see it go but I only used it once anyway, RIP forum battles. Wonder what everyone else thinks...

I think it should stay, it was a bit of fun for the forum.
You don't even know the amount of work it took to run it.. and honestly, most people didn't even pay attention to what was going on in their topics..

Maybe just cut down on how many battles can go on at once? Works better then just shutting down the entire forum.

Well, the other problem I neglected to mention in the original post, (however Irviding later pointed out) is that people forget about the topics they post in there. Additionally, when you get people who want to battle, but nobody feels like competing with them you end up with a handful of topics just sat there with no replies. There are no grounds to move the topic, yet its just sat there making things look messy.

The decision to close it is pretty much set in stone I'm afraid.

I think there should be a big battle where 10 forums are submited before the closing of the Forum battles.

My suggestions

1. battles organized by staff only
2. battles only take place once a week/month or whenever you choose
3. there should be a link to the topic in the header of the forum so people can go to the topic quickly and it exposes it to everyone = more entries

dont get rid of it :-( it just needs to be thought out properly, maybe even a separate staff group to organize and il be more than welcome to help out if needed.

If people used it, then you shouldn't left it, if people didn't use it, then you could remove it. But if it was a lot of work for staff to organize it, then what is staff for? No offense to any of the staff...

RIP forum battles, I think you made the right choice to be honest. I never paid any attention to it.

 God knows?

😛 It's not as if now that The forum battles is closed we're going to get a cup of coffee and put our feet up, there is always work to be done around forum promotion, so now forum battles is closed we will have more time to concentrate on more important things

Well, most members never actually read the guidelines. Where you have to PM a CM member, or Team Leader of the forum.

Plus, most battles don't go down, accurately. Most are who is the most popular member, or who are friends on the forum. Most don't even click the actual forum links, but just vote for a name they recognize from the forum.

The fact remains that it wasn't well used, it takes alot of work to set up polls and voting topics and clearing up these and the submissions. All the staff have jobs to do. They won't sit and do nothing. Managing this section was part of no teams jobs and people would help out when they could but managing the services and clearing up the spam and keeping up to date with all the posts is hard work. Especially now when the forums activity is a big as it is now and it is hard to keep up to date with all the many hundreds of posts we get each day.

A dedicated team will just be not worth it. The whole battle area was just for fun. Making a big thing out of it and making links in the header is just pointless for something that provides no benefit. A dedicated team won't really cause the section to become more active and it will just cause us to have more staff which will make the forum look even more intimidating to regular members if nearly every other member is staff. It just won't work.

RIP but not something I ever really looked at - actually never.

Never used it and never had any intention to using it. Because if I lost......let's just say I am a poor loser haha.

I lost my battle anyway

Well it is FP's decision and it is probably for the best

i never really paid any attention to it either. not sad to see it go 🙂
